QB1 Will Howard (Official Thread)

A McCord-level arm paired with a legit threat to run (paired with a legit threat to Cardale your safety if you don’t spy him with a linebacker) should open up the pass game and allow for better passing efficiency and better red zone efficiency
Bingo.

We don’t need a CJ Stroud to win it all. We need a QB that’s going to make teams pay in both run and pass. I think Will can do that…

Here’s another thing to be excited about.. Howard was just learning the offense this spring much like Fields did in 2019. Yet despite that he performed as well if not better than a kid that’s been here for 3 years. With a full summer, full fall camp and another 6 weeks to ease into the season (it’s that bad) I really think Will has potential to be in NYC come December

Aren't all the QBs learning a new offense since we have a new OC in place?

Since the Day offense is a derivative of the Kelley offense, my expectation would be that guys with time in Day’s offense would have an advantage

How much of an advantage?

That’s a question for someone who knows what he’s talking about, most of whom are paid to coach football and are thus too busy for message boards

I'd take a guess and say that things have changed due to ttuns stealing and cheating ways.

Yeah, calling plays has changed for everyone due to scUM's cheating:

1) Ohio State football coach Ryan Day largely sidestepped questions on Tuesday about an alleged sign-stealing scandal involving Michigan, his program’s archrival, but he supported an idea that might diminish a practice seen as common across college football.

At his weekly news conference four days ahead of the Buckeyes’ visit to Wisconsin, Day said the sport should look into adding helmet communication, a technology that has been used in the NFL for decades.

2) On Nov. 16, Sarkisian made his stance on in-helmet communication clear.

“Everybody write an article about ‘Why doesn’t college football have coach-to-player communication?,’ so I don’t have to deal with sign-stealing,” Sarkisian said. “I spend half of my week changing signals and signs rather than coaching the game of football. So please, write an article.”

3) Sign of the times: NCAA approves coach-to-player helmet communication for 2024 football season

College football is ready to put the signs away.

The NCAA’s playing rules oversight committee on Friday approved the use of coach-to-player helmet communications in games for the 2024 season. The move, in discussion for years, also follows a sign-stealing scandal that rocked the sport and hung over Michigan’s championship run in 2023.

I was with you all the way up to the NYC bit. Looking for a big year out of him, though.

I'm definitely not counting on it, but an athletic QB who can distribute to elite WRs and RBs can do a lot of damage, especially with Kelly bolstering the run game and calling plays. 3500 40/10 - 600/10 isn't out of the question.

I get that last year and the run game struggles overall have scarred people, but if (and yes, it's a big if) Howard catches on, this year will look a lot more like the '19 and '20 offenses that focused more on a grinding running game due to the strengths of the QB and team overall. I also think that while Wilson was a fantastic OC, Kelly will be a leveled up version of him in regards to play design.

I think/hope we will see the talent/ability advantages now weaponized on both sides of the ball. That's the beauty of having Knowles and Kelly as coordinators.
I am very excited to have what should be an elite OC and DC, with Day stepping back into CEO mode. In a much different context, I understand that struggle but I think Day has finally caught on to that approach and made some fantastic hires.

Specific to Howard, I do think he is perfect for how Kelly runs an offense. I just know we are going to see a shotgun formation with Tre and Judkins beside Howard, and get your popcorn. There will be plenty of other creativity and also getting the ball to playmakers on routine plays, but I do think we are going to be happier with the offense this year under Howard.

The fact that Chip Kelly could turn Jeremiah Masoli and Darron Thomas into CFB stars, shows me that he can get equal production from Howard.

Average those two together and look how good the stats are and then, think about how good the supporting cast is going to be this year compared to what those other two had to work with. This is gonna be good.

Edit: Obviously @DaddyBigBucks I am not, but the numbers I looked at in a minimum type of range instead of those career numbers, tell me that if the QB takes care of the ball, at minimum. We're going trophy hunting.

Only those INTs are a bad number. Dear God those rows are so out of whack. Mea Culpa

I expect a ton of Judkin/Henderson/Howard formations within the 20 yard line.

Then if I’m being honest I’d love to see both backs lead the way for Howard on a QB power. It’s going to be hard to stop 245 pound Howard without lead blockers, but if given a blocker or two? Geez that’s gold inside the 5 yard line.

With you conceptually, but I think we want TCC or one of the TEs leading that charge, not the racehorses.
How about spread 5 wide, run some pick/rub routes, and then just run it with the QB. You have to cover the 5, leaving the middle 6-on-6. A smarter man than I should be able to figure out some blocking schemes and reads for the QB to know where to run it.
