QB1 Will Howard (National Champion)

I can see Howard dropping somewhere in the 3rd or 4th round, but to your point I'm not sure why? To your exact point, you could say he is just a product of his surroundings but that would flagrantly ignore the actual film of the accuracy he displayed last year and throwing into tight windows. Plus he CAN run when needed and navigates the pocket really well, escapes the rush and squares up to his target. Frankly I think he can win a QB1 gig in his first year depending on where he lands.

Which is completely ironic with the NFL. You see highly skilled draftees go onto teams that don’t surround their drafts with solid players (Burrow, Fields, Williams, etc). Then they wonder why their top picks at QB are struggling.

He also showed improvement. Not just from his KSU days, but you saw him developing throughout the season. I don't intend to argue he's a day 1 stater, but I think he can have a nice career

Having a very rough start to the combine. Missed 3 of 5 throws ( 2 were 10yd slants over the middle).

Update: more of the same - errant and over-throws

Looked like he got better at the end. He didn’t sound happy with his performance. I can’t imagine that it’s easy to work with receivers with whom you have no chemistry. Obviously nobody has chemistry, but still.

I’m sure his pro day will be much better. That said, if it is, someone wanting to be critical will just point to how easy his job is at tOSU to throw to NFL WRs.

He did seem to get into better timing as the combine went on. The early misses stood out because virtually every other QB was making the throws he was missing.

Obviously there’s more to it like footwork and understanding these are new WRs. The “experts” are saying it was a solid day though.

Yeah, they are watching things that we’re clearly not. I know I’m not qualified to speak to the mechanics, etc.

‘He’s got a real chance to be elite’: Will Howard hypes up Ohio State’s expected starting QB in 2025 while adding pressure

img_0522.webp

Ohio State QB Will Howard bumped his stock up with a terrific run in the College Football Playoff after an excellent regular season with the Buckeyes.

Before transferring to Ohio State, Howard wasn’t a quarterback who was seen as a surefire draft pick, instead perhaps an undrafted free agent. Now, he’s off to the NFL and shouldn’t be any worse than a fourth-round pick.

With Howard gone after just one year as a graduate transfer, Ohio State hands the offense to a new quarterback for a third straight year. Sophomore QB Julian Sayin is widely expected to be the next guy in line.

“Julian coming in he’s a little soft-spoken guy, he’s quiet, but now it’s his time,” Howard said at the NFL Scouting Combine on Friday.

Sayin decided to transfer to Ohio State along with Caleb Downs and C Seth McLaughlin last offseason. As a true freshman, the 6-foot-1 quarterback appeared in four games and had one passing touchdown with 84 passing yards.

“He’s got a real chance to be elite, man. I’m excited for him. He’s definitely stepping into that leadership position. I’m excited for him to take on that new role. He was a little soft-spoken at first. But now, this is his sophomore year,” Howard explained. “I'm excited for him to take that step, really be that leader for the team.”

Will Howard's NFL Combine performance wasn't as bad as other fanbases claim

While the Ohio State quarterback likely ended any shot of being a first-round pick, his NFL Combine performance wasn't as bad as some fanbases claim it was.

The Ohio State football program won the national championship because of what Will Howard was able to do. Howard ended up being the perfect fit for the Buckeyes a year after Kyle McCord left. Ohio State got exactly the kind of leader and quarterback that they needed.

Howard was really good in the College Football Playoff run. In fact, he played so well that there were some rumblings that he could somehow be a first-round pick. A good performance at the NFL Combine could have given him a chance to increase his draft stock to that point.

Unfortunately, his throwing portion of the Combine wasn't perfect. There was one clip that opposing fanbases couldn't wait to share on social media because it wasn't Howard's best throw. His overall performance wasn't as bad as other fanbases want you to believe.

Will Howard's NFL Combine was perfectly fine

This is the clip that opposing fanbases gravitated towards.

While some of his throws weren't great, the tape on him doesn't lie. He was extremely accurate when the games mattered the most at the end of the year. He had some great throws in tight windows in the Cotton Bowl against Texas that very few quarterbacks can make.

The dream of him being a first-round pick is certainly over. That just means that a team could end up getting a steal when they do draft him. Howard won't be falling past the third round. My guess is that he will be a late second-round pick, depending on what happens.

If an NFL team has a question about Howard, all they need to do is turn on the tape from any of the College Football Playoff games. He had one bad throw during that run, and it was the pick in the Texas game. Other than that, he was pretty much lights out.

If he landed on the Gmen, who currently have no QB. Then I suppose QB1 by default.

As much as we love Will, there are some serious Scarlett glasses in this thread right now.

I see he's working at driving that back leg and torquing his hips around to create ball velocity that his mechanics might sap. So clearly he has heard and accepted critique from his evals and position coaches.

There is no ego with Will, none. That's his best attribute. As a stoic principle, you cannot learn that which you already think you know. And ego is the death of progress. That's WHs strength - his ability to accept and apply coaching.

Crazy season is in full effect. How about teams actually just watch tape instead of who can do the best dog and pony show and looks good in spandex?

Will had a very solid playoffs but very average regular season.

I don’t think that’s even arguable. He’s a 3rd/4th rd pick IMO. Don’t think he’s ever a regular NFL starter but hope I’m wrong.

I always said…..Will is the better college QB, Kyle McCord is likely the higher upside NFL QB. I stand by that.

If “average regular season” means the upper 10% of college qbs, then I agree.
