Anyone wondering just how good Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor is should just ask Troy Smith.

Smith was in Beachwood on Sunday for an autograph signing at Cardboard Heroes when he gave his opinion of OSU's talented junior quarterback.

He hardly minced words.

"I've said time and time again," Smith said, "he could be the best ever to come through Ohio State and play that position."

Which is saying something since Smith won the 2006 Heisman Trophy and Pryor has no such hardware to his name.

Pryor has been named on more than a few Heisman watch lists this summer.

A big reason is his monster game in the Rose Bowl in January when he passed for 266 yards and ran for 72 yards in a 26-17 win over Oregon.

"I think it was tremendous," Smith said of Pryor's performance against the Ducks. "Any time you get a chance to get momentum going into the next season (with) a big Rose Bowl, it speaks volumes for his character and the team.

"It should help him a lot."

Shining Star: The Light Has Come On for Terrelle Pryor

For a few months in the winter, Terrelle Pryor was not the big man on campus, even after leading Ohio State to a win in the Rose Bowl. That?s because Evan Turner was captivating the college basketball world with his all-around excellence and his amazing comeback from a scary back injury, so much so that he raked in all conceivable recognition as the National Player of the Year.
In the process, he also won over Pryor.
?Evan Turner is a beast, man,? the OSU quarterback said in February. ?I can?t even go watch him because I miss basketball so much. That?s my favorite sport. But I have a love for football, too.?
Which is a good thing for Ohio State fans.
While the 6'6" Pryor can?t quite measure up to the 6'7" Turner and isn?t about to take his place on the hardwood ? as much as Thad Matta might want him to ? he certainly is in position to have a dream season of his own for the Buckeyes.

Starting as a scholarship player in the '08 season, he has 5 years to play 4 in any collegiate sport. After 4 years of football at tOSU, he could play basketball at another school if he graduated and then enrolled in a school that had a graduate program that isn't available at tOSU. That's what Paulus did when he went to Syracuse, and it required NCAA approval.

Technically, he could also transfer to another school in January 2012 (right after his last football game), sit out a full year until January 2013, and play the remainder of that season on a basketball scholarship at any non-Big Ten school (since the conference prohibits transferring to another member school on scholarship).

I can't believe either scenario would occur, however.

Either I never fully realized or have since forgotten just how injured Terrelle was throughout last season. Two turf toes (which I can tell you from experience is one of the worst feelings ever and never really fully heals), a torn ligament in his knee, a sprained knee on the other side, a broken finger on his throwing hand, and I've since been told he had a concussion midway through the season which is why you saw him switch helmets several times throughout the year. Amazing.

Buckeye signal caller one of 13 juniors to make the list

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Ohio State junior quarterback Terrelle Pryor is among 30 of the nation's top collegiate quarterbacks who were selected to the 2010 Davey O?Brien National Quarterback Award watch list. Preseason consideration is based on player performance during the previous year and expectations heading into the 2010 college football season.

Last season Pryor passed for 2,094 yards with 18 touchdowns and led the Buckeyes with 779 yards and seven TDs on the ground. The Rose Bowl MVP passed for a season-high 266 yards and two touchdowns, rushed for 72 more and set an Ohio State bowl game record with 338 yards of total offense as the Buckeyes upset the Oregon Ducks on New Year?s Day, 26-17. He enters 2010 with more than 4,800 yards of total offense and is the fifth Buckeye quarterback to rush for more than 1,000 career yards with two years of eligibility remaining.

Pryor is one of 13 juniors to make the list and joins counterparts Ricky Stanzi (Iowa) and Scott Tolzien (Wisconsin) from the Big Ten.

Appearing on the Watch List is not a requirement for a player to be awarded The O'Brien. Quarterbacks from all 120 NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools are eligible for the award until the field is narrowed to 16 semifinalists Monday, Oct. 25. The Foundation and the Selection Committee will announce three finalists Monday, Nov. 22. The 2010 winner will be announced on The Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show Thursday, Dec. 9.
The Davey O'Brien trophy is the oldest and most prestigious quarterback award. Candidates are evaluated on their quarterback skills/athletic ability, academics, team spirit, character, leadership and sportsmanship.
