SHARON, Pa. -- The Jeannette boys' basketball team attended its first anger-management class yesterday, as part of a penalty the WPIAL placed on the team for a fight after a game last week.
"The kids said they enjoyed it," Jeannette coach Jim Nesser said of the class. "They said they learned some things about themselves."
By nightfall, North East's team learned something about the Jayhawks. They can shoot.
Jeannette shot a torrid 76 percent from the field in the first half, jumped to a 16-point halftime lead and went on to defeat District 10 champion North East, 75-66, in a PIAA Class AA semifinal last night at Sharon.
A sellout crowd of more than 2,500 attended the contest and hundreds also were turned away at the gate.

Junior point guard Jordan Hall and senior guard-forward Terrelle Pryor led Jeannette with 17 points apiece. Senior guard-forward Shaw Sunder added 14 and junior guard Cam Baradziej came off the bench to score 14.
Pryor had a triple-double with 14 rebounds and 10 assists. He also had 4 blocked shots.
Pryor moved his career point total to 2,262 points and passed Pine-Richland's Allan MacQuarrie and Blackhawk's Dante Calabria to move into 10th place on the WPIAL's all-time scoring list.

Jeannette's uncanny accuracy foils North East

SHARON - When the Jeannette basketball team warmed up prior to Wednesday's game, the Jayhawks launched repeated misfires and airballs. But when the PIAA Class AA semifinal game began against District 10 champion North East, Jeannette didn't miss.
Jeannette (24-4) shot 76 percent from the floor in the first half (19 of 25), made all six 3-pointers, and then held on for a 75-66 victory at Sharon High School.
A standing-room-only, sellout crowd of more than 2,600 people squeezed into Sharon's gymnasium, and hundreds more were turned away.

Nick Kasa, perhaps the best prep football player from the state of Colorado in the 2009 recruiting cycle, isn't real impressed with the No. 1 recruit in the nation in 2008.

I wrote about Kasa for today's paper. I spent some time with him last week one afternoon at track practice at Legacy High School in Broomfield, and I had some interesting material left over after writing the story about the speedy defensive end. I thought I would share it here.

While talking with Kasa we got on the topic of how best to handle the recruiting process while not letting it take over your life and not allowing yourself to get a big head from the all the attention. He seems like a pretty level-headed, easy going guy to me.

Let's face it, egos can be easily inflated with young men who haven't really fully matured being told over and over again for several years how great they are.

Anyway, Kasa brought up Pryor, the dual-threat quarterback from Jeanette, Pa., who was rated as the No. 1 football recruit in the nation for 2008 but still hasn't picked a school. He is said to be debating between Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State.

A few articles and blogs have been written about ugly incidents Pryor has been involved in during the basketball season. Yes, he's quite a basketball player, too. And some have suggested Pryor is enjoying his status and all the attention that comes with it just a little too much.

I've never met Pryor and don't know how valid any of those criticisms are. I do know plenty of people have defended him and he must be a target for fans in the stands everywhere he goes. That seems to come with the territory these days,which is a shame.

Somethng about Pryor doesn't sit well with Kasa. Most recruits seem to be happy when national signing day arrives and they can put the circus behind them. For whatever reason that isn't the case with Pryor and that rubs Kasa the wrong way. I asked Kasa what his parents have said to him about being so highly recruited and this was his answer:

?Don?t get big-headed like some of these guys,? Kasa said. ?Like, I?m not picking on guys, but this Terrelle Pryor guy, I really don?t like him. I don?t think anyone does right now. He?s being like a little girl about his recruiting. I think that?s just taking it too far. You don?t get that big-headed. You?re not at the top of the world already. He?s in high school.?

Jeannette ready to battle for PIAA championship

Jeannette boys basketball coach Jim Nesser was busy Thursday preparing for the PIAA Class AA championship game. He was on a PIAA telephone conference in the morning with reporters, and he spent part of the afternoon calling friends to find out everything he could about his team's opponent, Strawberry Mansion (23-5).
What he found out about the Philadelphia City League public school is that Strawberry Mansion has a good team.
"They're good, nice size, they're quick, and they play hard," Nesser said. "We'll have our hands full. We've played Chester, and it is ranked No. 3 in the country, and we played South Atlanta. We've played some great basketball teams who have talent.


"We're not going to back down. We might try to slow down the tempo, but we're going to play. We're going to compete, and we're going to challenge every play. We're going to play for 32 minutes and give it all we got."

Jeannette wins AA title in overtime

Terrelle Pryor scored 23 points and Shaw Sunder added 21 points, and Jeannette (25-4) became the first WPIAL team to win both a football and basketball title in the same year with a 76-72 overtime victory Saturday over Philadelphia Public League winner Strawberry Mansion at Penn State?s Bryce Jordan Center. Jeannette, who won both PIAA Class AA titles in football and basketball, rallied from a 43-36 deficit in the third quarter to grab a lead in the fourth quarter on the clutch 3-point shooting of Sunder and Jordan Hall (16 points).

His not taking anymore visits bodes well for us. His announcing so soon after the basketball season ending would also suggest his mind is made up, i.e., he's not really torn about where to go.
