Jeannette routs overmatched Kane

It's been a difficult week for Jeannette senior Terrelle Pryor. The 6-foot-5[1/2] forward battled the flu for a couple of days, and then spent time with his father, Craig, at the hospital Friday night. Craig Pryor was admitted and had surgery for a heart problem on Friday.
But those distractions didn't seem to bother Pryor and the Jeannette basketball team on Saturday during the opening round of the PIAA Class AA playoffs against District 9 runner-up Kane.
Jeannette scored the first 10 points of the game, led by as many as 20 points in the first quarter and rolled to an easy 83-41 victory over Kane (18-10) at Hempfield's Spartan Field House.

Pryor's priority basketball, for now

Sharon, Pa. -- Day 28 since the Day of No Decision. Subject No. 1 -- Pryor, Terrelle -- seems aloof Wednesday night, at times disinterested. He applies himself only when necessary -- and when a fast-break dunk appears possible.
"He plays as well as he needs to play," says his basketball coach at Jeannette High School, Jim Nesser. "I don't know if that sounds good, but if he needs to take it to another level, he can do that."
His team vanquishes its foe, Girard High, nonetheless, prevailing, 67-35. Subject Pryor scores 16 points on 7-of-15 shooting, grabs 10 rebounds, hands out seven assists, blocks four shots and makes two steals.

Jeannette advances to the quarterfinals of the Pennsylvania boys basketball state tournament. The team plays again Saturday, and if it continues to win will play next Wednesday, then Saturday, March 15, in the Class AA state title game at Penn State.

Jeannette springs to life, routs Girard

Jeannette started slowly in the first half Wednesday night, scoring just eight points in the first 6:48. But once the Jayhawks woke up, they never gave Girard a second thought.
Jeannette overcame the slow start and cruised to a 67-35 victory over the Yellowjackets in the second round of the PIAA Class AA boys basketball playoffs at a packed Sharon High School gymnasium.
Senior forward Terrelle Pryor had a team-high 16 points, junior guard Jordan Hall added 14 and junior guard Moziah Harris had 12 for Jeannette (22-4), which advances to play North Catholic (25-4) on Saturday in the quarterfinals at a site and time to be determined.

Jeannette's Pryor a popular figure

Go figure. Sports stars strive to be on trading cards, cereal boxes and magazine covers, but only a select few get action figures made of them, and most are pros.
Jeannette's Terrelle Pryor is a high school senior who still enjoys toying around, but he already has his own action figure - and even he can't believe it.
"It's crazy," said Pryor, who will lead his team into the PIAA Class AA basketball quarterfinals against North Catholic at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hempfield. "I'm like, that's me. It's hard to believe someone would make that. I was just hoping to be a bobblehead some day."

With 3 weeks left to choose, Terrelle Pryor wants mom to visit U-M, OSU, PSU with him

Terrelle Pryor still hasn't chosen where he'll play football next season. More than a month has passed since Feb. 6, the first day college recruits could officially sign with schools, and Pryor still hasn't decided among Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State and Oregon.

Mike Farrell, Rivals.com recruiting analyst, wrote a piece that appeared on SI.com Thursday night about the situation. Below are a pair of excerpts from the article.
Among the factors being discussed include location, the offense, the coaching staff, early playing time and the talent that would surround Pryor.

There's one potential factor that has gone overlooked for the most part: Will basketball have any impact on the decision of the 6-foot-5, 235-pound quarterback?

"No, it won't," Pryor said. "I really like playing basketball and I'm still considering playing both football and basketball in college, but I'm not sure. I'm leaning toward just football, but I haven't decided for sure."

Why would basketball matter? Because Pryor also is one of the nation's top basketball prospects for the class of 2008. Pryor, who plays small forward, is ranked as the No. 28 basketball player in the country by Rivals.com.

Jeannette, North Catholic fight sparks WPIAL discipline review

The Jeannette High School boys' basketball team could face disciplinary action from the WPIAL because of a fight between the Jayhawks and North Catholic after today's PIAA playoff game at Hempfield.
Jeannette won the Class AA quarterfinal, 86-60, and the fight occurred outside the North Catholic locker room.
The WPIAL will hold a hearing Tuesday with all parties involved, and WPIAL executive director Tim O'Malley acknowledged some of Jeannette's players could face disclipinary action that might affect their status for Wednesday's semifinal game.
Jeannette star Terrelle Pryor was one of many players involved in the incident.

Terrelle Pryor, the top-ranked high school quarterback, was supposed to be in Atlantic City to pick up the Sportlink Award given to the nation's top high school player. But the Jeannette, Pa., resident is still involved in basketball playoffs.
So DeVier Posey, a wide receiver from Cincinnati and a good friend of Pryor's, was called in as a last-minute sub.
Posey is hoping to see Pryor in the coming years. He is headed to Ohio State, and Pryor was set to announce last month that he was becoming a Buckeye, too. But he extended the process so he could make an official visit to Penn State.
"I don't know where he's going, but I do know that he has a good time every time he comes to Columbus," Posey said. "I really don't know how it goes in State College."

On tap: Pryor has yet to schedule an official recruiting visit to Penn State or Oregon (he already made such trips to OSU and Michigan, and re-visited OSU on his own 16 days ago). Jeannette is scheduled to play North East on Wednesday night in Sharon, Pa., in the state semifinals. With a win, the Jayhawks would play the winner of Imhotep Christian-Strawberry Mansion for the state title Saturday afternoon at Penn State. Whether Pryor would follow that with an immediate official visit to PSU wasn't known, but school resumes at PSU on Monday following spring break.

No suspensions given for fight
WPIAL penalizes both schools from Saturday's fight

The WPIAL placed penalties tonight on the Jeannette and North Catholic high school basketball teams and school officials for a fight after Saturday's PIAA playoff game. But no players are suspended, which means Jeannette will be at full strength for tomorrow night's PIAA Class AA semifinal game.
The fight occurred Saturday after Jeannette defeated North Catholic in a PIAA quarterfinal game. The WPIAL Board of Control had a hearing today with both teams and school officials. The board placed the following penalties on both schools:
• The coaches and players from both teams must attend anger-management classes by the end of the school year, and the coach of each team must attend a coaching education class.
• All athletic programs at both schools were placed on two years' probation. During that time, if any sports team is involved in a similar incident, the team will forfeit its rights to qualify for the playoffs.
• The coaches, principals and athletic administrators at both schools were publicly censured.
• Jeannette and North Catholic must give the WPIAL a written plan on how athletic contests will be managed in order to ensure a similar incident won't happen again. Jeannette must submit its plan by today.

Jeannette plays North East High School at Sharon High School, just over the Ohio border from Youngstown, at 7 p.m. tonight. The winner advances to Saturday's state title game at Penn State.
