Terrelle Pryor's Recruiting Diary: Despite what you might hear, no decision on college
Friday, January 25, 2008
Jeannette High School quarterback/defensive back Terrelle Pryor is ranked the No. 1 player in the country by several scouting services and is being recruited by colleges nationwide. Pryor plans to announce his college decision Feb. 6, live on ESPN television. Until then, the Post-Gazette will periodically run a diary from Pryor, as told to staff writer Mike White.

I made my official visit to the University of Michigan last weekend, but I didn't meet with the basketball coaches at all. I didn't have time, but it's looking more doubtful that I'll play basketball in college.
Now that I'm starting to get more realistic about this whole thing, I just think there's no way I could play both football and basketball. Just with school alone, I think there's no way I can do both. Plus, I'm going to want at least a little bit of time to myself.
I'm going to be pounding away at football [in college]. If I want to win a national title, I'm going to have to work out and lift weights in the offseason. Maybe even go over films. Plus, I'll want to chill a little. I don't know if I can do all that and play basketball.
I probably won't know definitely until I step on [college] campus. This is just me talking now, but there's a lot more doubt now about me playing basketball.
I feel better about Michigan since I went there. I took [Steelers backup quarterback] Charlie Batch with me. He's helping me through this whole process. We got every single detail about what they're going to do with me in their offense. I got a good feel for things and a good look at Coach [Rich] Rodriguez.

Pryor's presence will boost Classic Sunday
Friday, January 25, 2008
By Mike White, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
John Giammarco wants to promote high school basketball in Western Pennsylvania; Terrelle Pryor will help this weekend.
Giammarco is running the Pittsburgh High School Basketball Classic Sunday at Duquesne University's Palumbo Center. It is a three-game event, and one of the big draws is Pryor, the all-everything football/basketball star at Jeannette.
Pryor and Jeannette will play in the 7 p.m. game against Aliquippa. At 3, Upper St. Clair meets Chartiers Valley. American Christian Academy near Philadelphia plays Notre Dame Prep (Mass.) at 5. All three can be seen live on PCN television.
The Jeannette-Aliquippa contest is a rematch of the WPIAL Class AA title game last season, and most of the players on the court also knocked heads in a memorable WPIAL football semifinal in November. Jeannette won, 70-48, in the highest-scoring game in WPIAL history.
"Terrelle Pryor sells tickets," Giammarco said. "He's one of the best athletes to ever come through Western Pennsylvania. The clock is starting to wind down for Western Pennsylvania people to see him play. I'm honored he's going to be part of this event."

Pryor's interest in LSU is fading
Top-rated QB cancels weekend visit
Glenn Guilbeau
[email protected]

Apparently, the No. 1 quarterback in the nation only has a passing interest in LSU.Terrelle Pryor of Jeannette, Pa., has talked a lot about LSU in recent weeks and scheduled a visit to campus for this weekend, but he will not be coming after all.
"Right now it doesn't look likely that he will visit LSU at all," said area recruiting expert Sonny Shipp of Scout.com. "He's talked about coming in for a mid-week visit, but nothing has been planned."
The 6-foot-6, 230-pound Pryor, who threw for 1,790 yards and rushed for another 1,901 last season, is considering Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon and Florida.

Could Pryor be a bust?
By Scott Bell
Detroit Free Press

Ohio State and Michigan are both key players in the recruitment of Pennsylvania high school phenom Terrelle Pryor. But is the dual-threat quarterback, who's listed as the nation's No. 1 recruit according to Rivals.com, Scout.com and SuperPrep) guaranteed to be a star?
Most people who have seen Pryor play would say yes. But history isn't exactly on their side.
Over the past five seasons, no top-ranked quarterback has received All-American honors. Only Georgia's Matthew Stafford, 2006's top-ranked signal caller, has come close to reaching his potential. In his second season under center, Stafford led the Bulldogs to an 11-2 season highlighted by a Sugar Bowl victory earlier this month.
2004's top QB, Oklahoma's Rhett Bomar (class of 2004), isn't even playing major college football.

Terrelle Pryor, a 6-foot-6, 225-pound bundle of talent, is uncommitted as to where he will play next season. Many predict the star quarterback will choose between Michigan and Ohio State on National Signing Day, Feb. 6.

MICHAEL ROSENBERG: If Rodriguez misses out on Pryor, why can't he find another QB?
January 27, 2008

In all the years I have followed ... er, been aware of recruiting, I've never seen anything like what's happening with Terrelle Pryor.

I've never seen so many people act like the future of Michigan football hinges on one recruit. If that's really the case, coach Rich Rodriguez is in trouble, whether he gets Pryor or not. No program should be that dependent on one player.

With almost no effort, you can stumble around the Internet and find hundreds of opinions about where Terrelle Pryor should attend college, and why. None of these opinions consider academic programs or quality of campus life.

Instead, almost all of these hundreds (maybe thousands) of people who have never met Pryor base their opinions on offensive schemes, depth charts and the fact that they really, really, really want Pryor to play for their favorite team, because he's really good and that'd be cool.

Given those facts, obviously their favorite team is the best fit for Pryor, the super-special high school quarterback from Pennsylvania who, by the way, is scheduled to visit Oregon in the next few days -- much to the joy of hyperventilating Ducks fans certain that Eugene is the best place for Pryor.

On 1/11/08 the Pittsburgh Post Gazette published an article announcing that Charlie Batch will join him (TP) on his remaining recruiting trips [ http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/08011/848406-365.stm# ]. The Post Gazette printed the following when describing Batch?s role in TP?s recruitment:
I've known Charlie for a couple years. His brother dates my aunt. Charlie is kind of part of my family now. We talk. I asked him if he would want to go on my visits, and he said sure.
He'll just help me because he's been through this recruiting process before. Just from talking to him, I trust him a lot. When I go on these visits, I think he'll know who's telling the truth just by sitting there and listening.
For some reason TP believes that people he will meet during his recruitment may not be totally honest with him. Wise young man. It?s great that he can bring along a former college and current NFL player with him since his father is confined to a wheelchair and has a difficult time travelling. TP must also remember that his own perceptions of people or institutions potentially lacking credibility should not be ignored. Sometimes the best clues are in plain sight. A case in point is with Michigan and its stadium renovation project.

It?s no secret that Michigan is renovating its stadium to bring it into the 20th century. It?s also no secret that Michigan has rubbed a few people and the federal government the wrong way in the course of this renovation project. Specifically, Michigan Stadium presently has 88 (eighty eight) spaces allocated for wheelchair confined fans and their assistants. Federal law requires this stadium to allocate 1% of the approximate 107,000 seating capacity for disabled patrons. The University?s position is that the work on the stadium amounts only to repairs rather than a renovation, and as such it is not required to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act that would require a set aside of 1,070 seats for disabled patrons. A disabled veterans organization based in Michigan sued the University to resolve this issue, and the US Justice Dept. has joined in this lawsuit as a party plaintiff with the disabled veterans. Here is a link from The Detroit News [ Feds join disabled in U-M stadium suit
] to the latest news on this case.

When OSU finished its renovation of the Shoe, there were no problems for the University to meet the ADA?s disabled patron seat set aside. There is also no shortage of disabled patrons who regularly attend games at the Shoe. OSU did not need to be sued to do what the law required it to do. Stadiums across the country have had no trouble complying with ADA disabled seating requirements. Yet here is the University of Michigan that is on the one hand thumbing its nose at its disabled patrons while on the other hand telling the family of a prized recruit whose father is in a wheelchair that the institution will take care of the recruit if he enrolls. This would be funny if it wasn?t so serious. This cuts to the very heart of credibility. Why would I as a parent believe this institution without worrying about the need to sue to enforce promises made? It?s bad enough that the newly hired coach is thumbing his nose at his contract obligations to the University of West Virginia. It?s piling on when the University itself has a similar problem in complying with legal obligations.

Another case in point is comparing the parting words of Rob Schoenhoft to those of Ryan Mallet. Robbie had nothing but praise for Tressel on how Tressel helped him sort through his feelings about transferring and how Tressel helped him transition out of OSU. Mallet on the other hand could not get out of Dodge quick enough. RR amazingly stated that he only cares about athletes who want to play at Michigan when asked by reporters what he thought about Mallet transferring. Nothing further needs to be said on this point. The actions not only speak for themselves but scream for themselves.

So TP wants to know who is credible. Here is a starting point ? go beyond the words, and look very closely at the actions. The actions of a coach and a University who are apparently attempting to avoid legal obligations solely for monetary reasons. All the disabled veteran is asking for is the opportunity to attend the same game that TP?s father could attend IF his or her son was the team QB. Would I trust the word of that coach? Would I trust the word of the people within that institution? A coach who is quoted as saying that ?? he was "not astute to what is 'officially resigned? [ In Rodriguez lawsuit, parties argue over court jurisdiction - U Administration ] while handling his own affairs with $4 million on the line. Credibility is taking a 5?11? rough around the edges Glenville grad and molding him first into a man with a college degree, and then as a Heisman Trophy winning QB who started his NFL team?s last 2 regular season games as a rookie QB. A coach who stood by this young man when everybody wanted Troy?s hide for taking money from a booster. A coach who was endlessly vilified by the press as being a cancer to college athletics but who gave no ground in doing what any loving parent would have done in Troy?s situation. That is credibility ? when Tressel tells the athlete he is part of his family, it has meaning. And he is there for everybody no matter when that athlete played. Compare the coach trying to avoid his own alma mater a $ million contractual obligation with a coach who gave $250K to YSU to help construct a reading room in the student union, $500K to YSU to help with the costs of constructing a practice facility, and a very generous amount for the new OSU library renovation. The same Tressel who has enough self esteem to see to it that former coaches Bruce and Cooper have offices in the WHAC.

Credibility is more than spouting off X?s, O?s, formations, and early playing time. It is walking the talk. After all, 2009 is only around the corner for the next best athlete who will also be promised the same moon and stars. Hopefully the University of Michigan personnel involved in TP?s recruiting weekend had answers to these important questions assuming the questions were asked in the course of the recruiting visit.

Jeannette outruns Aliquippa, 62-44
Jayhawks beat Quips despite busy schedule
Monday, January 28, 2008
By Mike White, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Coach Jim Nesser was worried about his team's legs. His Jeannette team was playing its fifth game in seven days and second in 24 hours.
But fatigue was never a factor as Jeannette made Aliquippa look like it was running in sand.
Jeannette took out the Quips' legs early, led by 18 points at halftime and rolled to a 62-44 victory last night in the Pittsburgh High School Basketball Classic at Duquesne's Palumbo Center. It was the final game of the tripleheader event, which was run by John Giammarco and the Pittsburgh Basketball Club.
Jeannette, the Post-Gazette's No. 2 WPIAL Class AA team, lifted its record to 14-3 with the non-section win. No. 3 Aliquippa dropped to 14-7. It was the lowest output of the season for Aliquippa, which was averaging 64 points a game.

Pryor to be named Parade's top player
Monday, January 28, 2008
By Mike White, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
The honors keep piling up for Terrelle Pryor.
Pryor has won just about every player of the year award on the district and state levels, and now he has won a prestigious national honor.
Pryor has been selected Parade magazine's national player of the year for the 2007 season. His selection, and the Parade All-American team, will be announced in Sunday's issue of Parade.
"He was sort of a consensus choice among people that we talk to across the country," said Doug Huff, one of the major contributors to the committee that picks the player of the year.
Parade has selected a player of the year since 1983. Running back Emmitt Smith and quarterback Tim Couch are a few former winners of the award.

Harris: College of Pryor's choice

Hey Terrelle: So, who's it going to be?
Ohio State or Michigan?
Michigan or Ohio State? Rich Rodriguez's spread offense, or Jim Tressel's spread-the-wealth offense?
One-hundred-thousand-plus fans at Ohio Stadium, or one-hundred-thousand-plus fans at Michigan Stadium?
As the No. 1 overall high-school recruit in the entire country, you'll never again be in such a rare position of power as you are at this very moment.
Next year you won't be the No. 1 recruit in the country. Next year you'll be a college freshman. You won't have the same leverage.
Never forget that you have the upper hand, Terrelle.
Not Tressel and Rodriguez, who are mere pawns in a game that you control.

Jayhawks roll to surprising victory in Classic

By Paul Schofield
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Monday, January 28, 2008

Jeannette turned in one of its best games of the season Sunday night at Duquesne University's Palumbo Center. The Jayhawks, who are ranked No. 2 in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review in Class AA, raced out to a big first-half lead and stunned No. 3 Aliquippa, 62-44, in the final game of the Pittsburgh High School Basketball Classic.
It was the first time Jeannette has beaten Aliquippa on the basketball court in recent memory. The Quips won both meetings last year, and won another meeting during Terrelle Pryor's freshman year. Jeannette has won the past two football meetings, including a 70-48 victory in the WPIAL Class AA semifinals.

Pryor hasn't scheduled any more visits, friend says

Monday, January 28, 2008 5:28 AM

The nation's top prospect, quarterback Terrelle Pryor of Jeannette, Pa., has yet to schedule another official visit, his mentor, Charlie Batch, told The Dispatch. "He wants to, but at this point he doesn't know exactly how that is going to happen, or whether it is going to happen at all," said Batch, a backup quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Pryor has made official visits to Ohio State and Michigan. He also is considering Oregon, Louisiana State and Penn State. Batch said no school had been eliminated but added, "I haven't really discussed that in detail with him, and I probably won't until near the end of the week."
