Pryor _ who else _ leads Pa. AA All-State
By PHILIP CMOR
- For The Associated Press
Jeannette coach Ray Reitz remembers first setting eyes on Terrelle Pryor when his future quarterback was playing midget football.
"He was so much bigger than everyone else," Reitz said. "We thought the other kids would catch up to him."
They never did. Nor did any other player at any school in Pennsylvania.
Already a two-time all-state selection heading into his senior year, the 6-foot-6, 225-pound Pryor further distanced himself from all others while completing his career as The Associated Press Pennsylvania Class AA player of the year.
It's all but certain that if there was an overall player of the year in the state, Pryor would have won that, too - despite playing two classes below Class AAAA.
Pryor amassed 3,778 yards in total offense - remarkably, split almost equally between running (1,899 yards) and passing (1,889 yards) - in leading the Jayhawks from the Pittsburgh area to a PIAA championship and a 16-0 season.
Pryor also accounted for a remarkable 58 touchdowns, scoring 35 times and throwing for 23. He scored a touchdown nearly once every four times he touched the ball, the equivalent of a baseball player homering once every four at-bats for an entire season.
Frequently, Pryor didn't play in the second half: Jeannette won all but four of its games by 36 points or more and set a new state record by scoring 860 points. The Jayhawks averaged nearly 54 points per game, so nearly all of their games were played with the mercy rule in effect during the second half.
Pryor wasn't the only Jayhawk on the all-state team. Teammates Jordan Hall, Mike Matt and Jason Marquis joined their quarterback on the first team, while Martel Walker made the second team.
That's not all: Reitz, who kept a team that featured what might be the nation's most recruited high school player grounded and focused throughout the long season, is the AA coach of the year.
