QB Ross Oltorik will not play this fall. He's on a baseball scholarship, and has decided to focus on that sport.
Back to the mound
Ross Oltorik, who served as a reserve quarterback last season, will not play football this fall to concentrate on baseball, Tressel said.
The sophomore pitcher from Cincinnati Moeller came to OSU on a baseball scholarship and played for the Buckeyes in the NCAA Tournament in the spring. He was part of a staff that Florida State shelled for 37 runs in an NCAA game.
"We need to get a deeper pitching staff, if you haven't noticed, and Ross needs to be a part of that," Tressel said.

Oltorik will play football at Arizona
By Mike Dyer ? [email protected] ? June 28, 2010
Former Ohio State quarterback and pitcher Ross Oltorik, a 2008 Moeller graduate, has transferred to Arizona.
Oltorik, who had some injuries at Ohio State, begins classes at Arizona July 12.
Oltorik, who took a medical redshirt last football season, tore his rotator cuff in his right shoulder a week before the Buckeyes' baseball season started this spring.
Oltorik said he will focus on football at Arizona and must sit out the upcoming year. He will be eligible to play for the Wildcats as a sophomore in 2011.
Oltorik, 21, is Moeller's all-time leading passer with more than 5,000 yards.
He was only the second quarterback to be a three-year starter for the Crusaders.
Walk-on quarterback from Ohio State arrives at Arizona
by Anthony Gimino on Jul.16, 2010
Ross Oltorik, a former pitcher and walk-on quarterback at Ohio State, is getting a fresh start at Arizona.
Oltorik arrived in Tucson earlier this week after getting all the paperwork cleared and will start summer classes on Monday. He?s already settled in to a living situation, rooming with junior college transfer linebackers Derek Earls and Paul Vassallo, who arrived for the spring semester.
Oltorik is looking to dedicate himself to football after suffering a rotator cuff injury before the 2010 baseball season. He said he had been scheduled to be the Saturday starting pitcher for the Buckeyes.
?A week before the season started, I tore my rotator cuff. Once that happened, I came to the conclusion that it?s time to focus on being the best quarterback I can be ? and do I want to do that at Ohio State or somewhere else?
?I had a couple of meetings with Coach (Jim) Tressel ? he?s a great guy, he?s been very good to me ? and he said he was full on scholarships until January.?
Oltorik, who is the career passing leader at Moeller High School in Cincinnati, first heard of Arizona from ex-Ohio State defensive tackle Willie Mobley, who spent last season at Orange Coast Community College in California before signing with the Wildcats.
?Once I got hurt, he gave me a call and said, ?You?ve got to come out here and play, this offense is perfect for you,?? Oltorik said.
Oltorik on board
Ross Oltorik befriended Nick Foles when he visited the UA earlier this summer.
It wasn't until later that Oltorik realized how much he had in common with the Wildcats' starting quarterback.
Both players were high school stars whose careers sputtered at Big Ten Conference schools. Both are quarterbacks known for their leadership abilities more than their physical skills.
And both have seemingly found a good fit at Arizona.
"It was, like, 'Wow, he's in the exact same situation I was in,'" Oltorik said. "He seemed like somebody I could model myself after."
Oltorik, a 6-2, 210-pound transfer from Ohio State, began working out with the Wildcats this week. A redshirt sophomore, he must sit out this season because of transfer rules.
Oltorik will spend this fall learning the UA spread offense - an attack, he said, that's identical to the one he ran while setting records at famed Moeller High School in Cincinnati.
"It's going to be more of a mental year," he said. "I'm going to get my body right, get healthy, learn the offense and get ready to go."
Oltorik, 21, will pay his own way until a scholarship opens up in January. He chose Arizona over Cincinnati, Ohio University and Florida; all three schools wanted him for baseball, football - or both. Oltorik was a starting pitcher and backup quarterback at Ohio State.
Oltorik said he enjoyed his time with the Buckeyes, even if it was marred by two shoulder injuries.
"At Ohio State, to be honest with you, I couldn't complain," he said. "I just didn't think it was the best fit for me in the long run. I'm excited about being here."
