QB Kirk Herbstreit (Frosted Quips, Brain with a Lunatic Fringe)

ESPN College GameDay's Kirk Herbstreit signed with Amazon to anchor its “Thursday Night Football” coverage this season, reports The New York Post. The deal with Amazon will not interfere with Herbstreit's weekly analyst duties with ESPN, nor hosting games on Saturday nights during college football season.

Amazon reportedly remains in pursuit of Al Michaels to join “Thursday Night Football” on a three-year, $33 million deal as lead. With Herbstreit on the way, Michaels will likely follow suit, sources have told The New York Post.

Andrew Marchand first reported Herbstreit and Amazon having mutual interest in working together last month, and received indication that ESPN would allow Herbstreit to "double dip" and work for both organizations during football season.

“I don’t know how I’m going to balance them all,” Herbstreit said on The Pat McAfee Show on Monday. “But I know I will. I’m just looking forward to kind of finding that routine. But I will not put everything into Thursday and shortchange GameDay, or shortchange Saturday night. I’ll be dialed in on all three.”

“You know, as much as I love college — I’d stay in that space because the rest of my career, would have been very content — I just thought, ‘OK, well, all this talk,’ because there was always talking about the potential of Chris (Fowler) and I doing Monday Night Football. Clearly that’s gone,” Herbstreit said. “So, I guess I’ll just stay in the college space, was basically my reaction. And then your friend and mine called me like the day after, maybe two days later, and said, ‘Hey, I got a call from the Amazon folks and they just want to check out, see what’s going on.’ And I honestly didn’t even really — I wasn’t like, ‘Oh, that’s great.’ It wasn’t anything like that. I was like, ‘OK.’ And then like a day or two later, he said you know, we potentially have a firm offer.’ And so, it moved very, very fast, and to the point where I had to really start to think about, ‘Can I do this?’”

“It just takes your breath away where a 24-year old lost his life,” Herbstreit said. “I don’t even think about football. I think about him and his family. He was such a great young man. Just a tragic, tragic morning. You remember that piece on College GameDay when he was about 10 or 11 years old and was in the Ohio State training room ... he dreamt his whole life about being a Buckeye, and was able to make that a reality. He became such a superstar of a player and chased that dream, then went on to the NFL. I talked with Ryan Day a little bit earlier and we were just reminiscing on him as a person, what a class act he was. It’s one of those things that you can’t even believe is real, you just can’t believe it happened. My thoughts and prayers are out to him and his family.

“I just think, at the end of the day, he had a great heart. Just a person that loves people and was raised the right way by his family. His teammates loved him, they wanted to play for him, they were drawn towards him. And he became a star in one year of starting. Just a guy that was very confident in his abilities, but like I said, he cared about people and he was a great teammate. The way he conducted himself on and off the field is what drew his teammates closer to him.”

“Ryan Day’s leadership as a head coach, I don’t know if Gene Smith knew when they hired him how much he could bring to the table in that area,” Herbstreit said during Ohio State's win over Michigan State. “When you hire a guy, you like his intelligence and his disposition, but until he becomes the guy, you really don’t know what you’re really getting as a first-time head coach. I like how he handles the media. He’s very matter-of-fact. He doesn’t go coach talk. He says this is the way it is. When they had the defensive issues, he was very forthcoming. Between that and the way he handles his players, it’s a very good energy and it has allowed his program to be one of the elites.”

Now if he could just take that leap of self awareness (or have any at all) to understand his incessant use of announcer talk.
