More likely, he's realizing that job security on the ESPiN fail boat ain't what it used to be. Everyone, at least a little bit, wants to go back home when things fall apart. They almost always find that it ain't home anymore--and Big Ten country sure isn't his home anymore.
It's not that viewers despise him, well not entirely, it's just that broadcasters have to be fair in their assessmenrs and there are so many better options. Put him in the booth and he doesn't pin his ears back or play well in that space. There's only so much you can do with fake tan and frosted tips and he just doesn't pass the eyeball test.
