QB Kirk ‘Nightmare On’ Herbstreit (Frosted Quips, Afraid of THE Lunatic Fringe)

How about his now yearly comments (after '07 & '08's bowls) about setting the program back 10 years, or the conference back to 1960 and likening the b10 to the MAC? Or scoffing at the notion of offensive playmakers going to play Tresselball?

These boneheaded comments have been increasing in frequency lately. Is he still sensitive from the UM-OSU 06 bandwagon fallout? Is ESPN up to their typical shock-jock tactics and forcing him to make these remarks?

Who knows... but it's beyond tiring.

Here is my completely different perspective. I think that he was - I dunno - embarrassed is the wrong word, but close (maybe loss of credibility would be closest) - to have pounded the Ohio State vs Michigan rematch drum so vehemently and in such a high profile manner. To combat the criticism, he has gone the other way in an attempt to restore his "objectivity". Doesn't matter if he is right, or even sounds stupid, his goal is a more global one of getting rid of the "homer" label of the '06 season.

Put simply, he went overboard the other way the following year. I think that he will settle down in '08, having "served his time" as a Big 10 /tOSU basher.

All things that haven't happened to other broadcasters who are almuni of schools they cover or anyone in any walk of life that has a consistent personality. This type of stuff happens to those always pretending to be something they aren't to get people to like them.

His real problem stems from his existance being validated by his popularity instead of his core beliefs. Back in the day Herbie would have been called a poser in my neighborhood.

Some want to give Herbie slack, some want to hang him with it. I personally don't give a fuck if he moves but comments like the "program saving" game, "this will set the program back 10 years", "why would any elite offensive prospect go to OSU ?" etc are what gets me. Add in that fucking picture with the scUM band and he's in my personal least fav 5.

He simply doesn't have to go that far to prove he's not an OSU homer. At this point I don't think he's ever going to learn that.

Sorry you're so peeved. Have a decaf.

We all know ESPN wants to stir the pot, and we all know the Buckeyes do not need the "program to be saved." In point of fact, it is really the Big Ten that needs to be saved, though nobody is really saying that. Herbstreit is simply keying into the company line, which exists to generate controversy and interest. So what? The king always gets scrutinized the most, and tOSU is the king.

The only thing that needs to happen to shut everyone up is for the Buckeyes to win a bowl game against the SEC. Unfortunately we haven't done so. But we will.

Disagree. Year in & year out, the national power conference changes.. sure the Big10 had a "down" year but I think it gets exaggerated and the conference certainly does not need to be saved sticking 2 teams in the BCS year after year.

Kirk Herbstreit from The Ohio State University = John McCain of The Republican Party.
