How a new coach, an old coach and a newborn helped spawn a changed Ohio State quarterback: The Kenny Guiton story

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The questions kept raining down on Kenny Guiton, and the kid was struggling to stay afloat.

Did you go there just for the football? Did you go there just for the degree?

These inquiries aren't so cut and dry, Kenny thought.

Are you getting out of it what you wanted? Do you love being there? Do you love playing?

Well, yes, Kenny thought. Nothing made him more proud than the privilege to say he was a Buckeye. And he enjoyed being around his teammates, though he admitted he wasn't much of a leader.

Has anything changed?

There was a time in high school when Kenny would heave an errant pass and that doggone receivers coach would be all over him.

Kenneth Guiton Sr. couldn't contain himself. He wanted his son to excel and his passion often surfaced during practice.

Those were the days when Kenny fought to prove himself as a sophomore quarterback. Those same days were but a faint memory a year and a half ago, when Kenny's college career reached purgatory, an unnerving state in which he had no plan, no goal and no inkling of what his future held.

Kenny entered the 2012 campaign -- his fourth year at Ohio State -- with a self-admitted "childish mentality." Then, his father spun him a web of loaded questions and forced Kenny to find his own way out.

Kenny eventually unearthed the proper responses, ones that paved the way for him to mature into an award-winning collegiate quarterback. He benefitted from a little help along the way from two people he barely knew.

Guiton could take the Cassel path to the NFL
The Buckeyes QB has an intriguing skill set. Dave Miller

While it appears that Ohio State quarterback Kenny Guiton will be headed back to the sideline this weekend with Braxton Miller cleared by doctors to return to the starting lineup against Wisconsin at Ohio Stadium, the backup signal-caller's future could still be very bright.

US PRESSWIRE
Kenny Guiton has a quarterback rating of 168.1 this year.

Guiton, who started the past two weeks and played nearly three full games on the season while Miller nursed a sprained knee, has been very impressive during his time in the spotlight, completing 68.4 percent of his passes for 664 yards and 13 touchdowns against two interceptions. The redshirt senior earned back-to-back Big Ten offensive player of the week honors, and he arguably solidified himself as the best backup quarterback in the country.

And some NFL scouts have taken notice.

Guiton's journey at Ohio State is one for the books

COLUMBUS, Ohio - With all signs pointing to Braxton Miller being healthy enough to return for Ohio State's Big Ten opener on Saturday vs. Wisconsin, Kenny Guiton's football future is uncertain. Guiton might continue to play in spots -- Urban Meyer has said he deserves that much -- or he might get extended action over what Ohio State hopes will be 10 remaining games; Miller has a penchant for running himself into trouble.

That very thing happened ten plays into Ohio State's game vs. San Diego State on Sept. 7, bringing Guiton into the game. The Buckeyes scored on Guiton's very first play.
