Corey Dennis’ Goal for Ohio State QB Justin Fields? ‘Just Enhance’

Following a season where Justin Fields threw for 41 touchdowns and just three interceptions while completing 67% of his passes, it might be a bit daunting for a first-year quarterback coach to now be tasked with improving on those numbers.

That is Corey Dennis’ job, however, as he steps in for the departed Mike Yurcich. This isn’t his first year with the Ohio State quarterbacks, of course, as he was a quality control coach the past two seasons and spent most of his time with the QBs.

The fact that he has been around the program and the players is a plus because he already knows everybody. He knows Fields. He knows what he does well, what he can improve, and there is a comfort level between the two of them that already incorporates trust.

“Justin and I have a great relationship,” Dennis said. “We’ve always had a great relationship. It’s one of those things that Justin wants to get better and Justin wants to enhance. And so that’s what my goal is, is just enhance. I’m not going to look to change anything and because we have a great relationship, I think that we can hopefully just keep making it better and just keep pushing the envelope.”

Right now, however, Dennis and Fields — and almost certainly head coach Ryan Day — are still in the evaluation mode from last season. What went right, what went wrong? And why did those things go the direction they did?

Once those answers come in, more direction on Fields’ progression and development will be known.

“We’ll get into spring ball and then we’ll kind of go from there,” Dennis said. “We’re still looking at it. We’re still in the process of watching cut ups and tweaking things and just kind of seeing what we did last year and how we’re going to change — or not really change, but just enhancing what things that we need to work on. So we’re still in the process of going through cut ups right now as we get going.”

Entering the 2019 season, there was plenty of excitement for the debut of Justin Fields. The sophomore transfer from Georgia entered training camp as the starter despite attempting just 39 passes during his brief stint in Athens, but both fans and media expected him to flourish in a system that produced the nation's leading passer a year prior.

His impact was felt immediately, darting 51 yards untouched for his first rushing touchdown in a Buckeye uniform on the season's opening drive. But although he was expected to pick up plenty of yards with his feet, he showed he could do so with his arm as well, connecting on four touchdown passes and finishing the day with 234 passing yards on 25 attempts.

Of course, Fields would go on to have one of the greatest passing seasons in school history, as his 3,273 passing yards mark the third-highest single-season total while his 41 TD passes trailed only Dwayne Haskins' 2018 total of 50. Most impressively, however, was his 181.43 QB rating, the highest ever recorded in one season at Ohio State.

Despite only seeing limited action as a freshman, his transition to a new school and system certainly appeared seamless. As Ryan Day noted, much of this was due to his development at the high school level.

"I know he was exposed to a high level of football just in terms of his understanding of situations, of playing the game, of coverages, things like that," Day said in December. "Pretty good coming in. Didn't know our offense and hadn't played. He wasn't, like, raw coming in."

But it wasn't as though Fields was perfect from day one. In fact, he came quite a long way as a passer in only 14 games last fall.

Excited when I saw this and it didn't disappoint. Nothing earth-shattering, but reinforces what many of us think of Fields and the potential to be quicker and more confident coming into this year. Wish it were September already.

FIELDS > LAWRENCE? I've been told since what feels like his freshman season of high school that Trevor Lawrence was going to be the No. 1 overall pick as soon as he is eligible for the draft.

Well, some NFL folks seem to think Justin Fields will have something to say about that.

It’s been assumed by many ever since Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence torched Alabama in the 2019 national championship game that he’d become the first pick of the NFL draft as soon as he’s eligible, which is in 2021. But a few coaches and folks in the quarterback space say they won’t be shocked if Justin Fields ends up pushing him for that top spot.

Now, this is hardly the consensus. Several coaches and evaluators I talked to this week think Lawrence is far and away the better quarterback prospect. Everyone I spoke to still loves Lawrence, and it’s not like the NFL personnel people have been able to study either extensively at this point. But the feeling I got from some coaches is that people don’t realize just how talented the Ohio State quarterback really is in terms of his arm and athleticism.

The 6-3, 230-pound Fields had a terrific debut season at Ohio State in 2019, throwing 41 touchdowns against only three interceptions while completing more than 67 percent of his passes. He also ran for 10 touchdowns and almost 500 yards. He figures to put up high numbers again as he settles in for his second season with Ryan Day, and he also should benefit from an even more athletic Buckeye receiving corps with a ridiculous crop of freshmen.

I'm still fairly certain the Afghan Hound will end up going No. 1 overall, but that doesn't mean Fields isn't better. He's bigger, more athletic, faster and honestly looked noticeably better throwing the ball the entire season. There's a reason why he was the one that was a Heisman Finalist and is currently the Heisman frontrunner.

I remember when we published an article in August highlighting the similarities between the two and Clemson fans nearly shit themselves at someone having the audacity to compare them.





Well, that #take aged like Macaulay Culkin.

I'm not trying to shit on Trevor Lawrence, because he's still a generational talent (who is probably still running past Ohio State's secondary) and one of the best quarterback prospects of all time. But the idea that Justin Fields isn't even in his galaxy is laughable at best.

I'll keep my generational quarterback, thank you. You can have yours.
