QB Justin Fields (2019-20 B1G Off POY, 2020 Silver Football, 2019 B1G CCG MVP, Pittsburgh Steelers)

The Ohio State head coach took part in a 10-minute Zoom press conference Sunday afternoon to react to the College Football Playoff semifinal matchup with Clemson and, as expected, was posed a question about the status of star quarterback Justin Fields' thumb which he hurt in the second half of the Big Ten championship game.

Day used only four words in his response: “Justin will be fine.”

Not exactly a detailed response. But if anybody was, for whatever reason, concerned Fields might have to sit out the Sugar Bowl due to his injury, that would certainly appear to be unfounded. He played the entire Big Ten title game and even threw a pass after he got hurt. He wasn't missing a playoff game due to a thumb he and Day believed on Saturday afternoon to be sprained.

My post was directed at the comment comparing Clemson’s talent to Northwestern’s. We all know our roster is filled with more high recruits than anyone other than bama.
I was comparing their linebacker play to Northwestern's. Since you wouldn't name the 4/5 stars lining their roster:

Starting LBs James Skalski (3*) & Baylon Spector (3) are NW level athletes. Mike Jones (4*) is the exception, though he missed many games with injury/covid.

Backups are Jake Venables (3), Kane Patterson (3* rivals), Keith Maguire (3), Sergio Allen (3* rivals), Kevin Swint (3* rivals). The exception is Lavonta Bentley (4), who gets 0-1 tackles a game.

Hybrid Simpson is technically not a starter, though is pretty much one. He's the next versatile 5* athlete to elevate the very average talent at S/LB, much like Simmons (who started as a 3* but was a 5* player).

Their production and athleticism is very Northwestern/Iowa level. That doesn't mean they're bad at football, it just means they are nothing like the guys they get at QB, WR, DE, DT.

Simmons was a monster (tho a 3*). The rest were not:

Draft picks:
'19 - none
'18 - 3rd O'Daniel (4)
'17 - none
'16 - 4th Goodson (3)
'15 - 6th Steward (5)
'14 - none
'13 - none
'12 - none

Beasley is a rush end in my book, where they sign & churn out monsters.

They consistently develop and/or sign monsters at DL, WR, QB. They're shockingly mediocre at LB for being an unquestioned top-5 program on the recruiting trail.

Do we know what play he hurt the thumb on?

At the 13:18 mark of the 4th quarter. He used the football to brace a minor fall out of bounds, and he got up grabbing his thumb. Next play, he threw a completion to Sermon for -2 yards. Next drive, he threw a completion to Wilson for 12 yards. Did not throw another pass in the game, as the failed 2 point conversion is not officially an incompletion. So, 2-2 for 10 yards post injury.

If he could just take check downs from time to time, he'd eliminate half the sacks and the big plays would eventually open up. Seems like he just hasn't had to time to develop in the pocket and adjust quickly when teams do unexpected things after the snap. Not that it's easy to do.

Anyway, can't expect anything to change in 11 days, so hopefully they have a game plan that relies on quick passes or limited reads and more running. It sucks, but the time (this season) to work on this aspect of his game is now over. He'll have to try and work this out at the next level which will be very difficult.

Oh I don't question we were the best team last year. Not just Clemson but everyone. We literally threw that game away last year vs Clemson. Even with all the calls against us we also went like 2 quarters straight without scoring which we just can't do.
Before we went 2 quarters without scoring we also only put up 9 points on 3 trips to the redzone. Can't do that either.

According to 247.....

Clemson has (5) 4* and (1) 5* linebackers on their roster. Northwestern has 0 and 0. I get and agree with your general point, but the talent (based on recruiting rating alone) isn’t even in the same ballpark.

Patterson, Allen, Swint were composite 4's (read: low 4 stars) but 3* on rivals. They were like a Tuf Borland, not quite in the top-300, rated as 3 stars elsewhere. Can beat the odds but you don't want to fill your roster with near 3* + actual 3*.

Simpson (5), Bentley (4), Jones (4) are the only prospects that would be surprising to find on a Northwestern roster.

And Clemson obviously signs more talent than Northwestern, but they have an oddly high amount of NW level players at that position, given how powerful their recruiting is at other positions.

Miller is definitely having a brutal year, but I agree with Fulton on this play, and I've said it many times in this thread. TE's were open all day on Saturday and JF just wasn't having it. Although, only one of them was open on this play.

Ohio State's constant refusal to use TE's through different head coaches, offensive coordinators, quarterbacks, etc. remains baffling to me.
