QB J.T. Barrett (B1G FOY, All American, Silver Football Award, 3x B1G QBOY, National Champion)

With all the limitations in JT’s passing game, Darnold last night was a great example of JTs ultimate value these last four years. Like many I’ve bemoaned his hesitant passing style, but there is a flip side to that coin. Darnold threw for 356 yards last night...and cost his team the game at the same time. He did so by not taking care of the ball.

Over 4 years one thing Barrett has been amazingly consistent at, with only one game as the inexplicable exception,is taking care of the ball. As a lover of Tresselball it’s been more than a bit silly for me to be so frustrated with his conservative style. Tressel calling a b-gap power on 3rd and 8 with the intention of punting for field position proved to be the smart play time and time again. Maybe all of those double-clutches and taking of sacks were just JT deciding he’d rather eat it than put the ball in a questionable window...and ultimately the results bore the correctness of those desicions out. Maybe it was actually the more difficult desicion to know his own limitations, and make the optimal play for his team while taking everything into account.

Good luck in whatever path your life takes you JT and thanks for all the great Buckeye memories I’ll surely never forget.

To me, the debate with Barrett boils down to this: could another great Ohio State QB do what he did if placed in a similar situation?

Troy Smith, Terrelle Pryor, Braxton Miller? I think the answer is, without a doubt, yes, they all would have put up similar, if not better, stats if given the opportunities Barrett has had.

Braxton Miller, yes. We saw what a healthy Braxton Miller did under the Tom Herman style of offense in Urban's first 2 years.

Terrelle Pryor, no. Although he came from the read option style offense in high school he had too many flaws in the college game. His deep throws were too high and became jump balls that our receivers were able to grabb. I did not like his running style. He looked like he was too afraid of getting injured. If a defender tried to hit him low, he would crumble of give into it not wanting to get a knee injury.

Troy Smith, I don't know. His passing abilities were up there with the great OSU QBs. His running was great when he needed to scramble or could not find a receiver. I don't know how he would do in the read option style where he would be getting hit a lot more. Then again I think he would do better in the Kevin Wilson style of offense which had less read options.

All this has to be put into the context of what offense you want to compare them too. Barrett played under three OCs and three different offense styles. His skill set fit better into the Tom Herman style than the Tim Beck style. Then again which of the QBs would do better under Tim Beck, but I digress.

You also have to look at the talent surrounding the QB. Would Troy Smith do any better with last year receivers? How much better would Barrett have looked last year throwing to Ted Ginn and Anthony Gonzalez?

I love JT for beating scUM 4 times and for only losing 6 times over 4 years plus all the other records he holds. It's difficult to wrap my mind around those two things though - 4-0 against scUM and 6 losses in 4 years. I only wish the very, very best for JT. I don't know what the future holds but the way the man could win games, I can't imagine we won't see him on the sidelines coaching. God bless you JT, absolutely the Greatest Buckeye QB these eyes have yet to witness. Not words I throw around lightly as I enter into my 5th decade next year. GO BUCKS, GO JT!

It says something that JT is the only QB since Troy Smith to finish out his senior season as the full time starting QB. I think we will look back and appreciate JT more as time goes on.

Troy, Braxton, and Pryor were all more fun to watch but JT held down the position longer than any of them. I would have loved to see Pryor in Urban's offense. I can't wait for the spring to see how each of the QBs step up to try to win the QB battle. I hope Burrows stays around to compete.

The problem with showing brilliance is that fans set that as the bar that should be a player's norm. We expect a linear progression over time and a 5th year senior should be x times better than a first year freshman. We expect issues to be resolved and we expect growth.

With JT Barret, fans didn't get that linear growth. His career arc was more erratic; filled with ups and downs. I'm looking at it like the stock market, say for the past 20 years (aka Barrett's tenure at OSU). There's been some spectacular highs and some magnificent crashes. Ultimately though, he's better off and we're better off after it.

Look at this year specifically. Ohio State had statistically the best offense it’s had under Urban Meyer. That included JT Barrett’s peak against Penn State. He delivered brilliance, and become the Heisman favorite...for a week, then Iowa happened. Since that game, we’ve seen the erratic swings. That’s JT.

It almost sounds like JT is happy for the ride to be over. He’s looking forward to sleeping in and doesn’t want to get into coaching. You can’t blame the guy. I think we’ll look back on his 4 years and remember him as the most prolific QB in OSU history, and we won’t remember he highs and lows because they aren’t captured in the record books. And for that, I’m grateful.
