QB J.T. Barrett (B1G FOY, All American, Silver Football Award, 3x B1G QBOY, National Champion)

I play a lot of fantasy football and there was a lot of discussion this summer about knee injuries as many key players were coming back from bad ones. Some thought that Mikel Leshoures could be career ending. He's back and starting for the Lions. People thought Jamaal Charles would not be himself this year and wouldn't get his explosiveness back til next season. He looks incredible. Rash are Mendenhall was said to likely miss the entire season after tearing his ACL in the playoffs. He had a big game last week in his return.

And last but not least, nobody seemed to believe that Adrian Peterson would return week one after suffering the exact same injury that Barrett reportedly has suffered late last season. But he was out there week one and looked as good as ever.

The consensus now seems to be that you can throw out all the case studies on knee injuries from even five years ago. There have been serious advancements and these knee injuries that were once career ending aren't even costing guys a full calendar year.

Rider QB Barrett sidelined for season
Raiders starter, safety Stone out with torn ACLs
By Andy Newberry
Posted October 11, 2012

J.T. Barrett has taken his last snap in a Rider uniform after injuring his knee in Friday's game at White Settlement Brewer.

Barrett got a second opinion on Wednesday and it confirmed that his ACL was torn with cartilage damage.

It wasn't how Barrett, who has committed to Ohio State, wanted to end his high school career. He didn't only dream of leading the Raiders past the fourth round and all the way to state, but he worked all year to turn that dream into reality.

And he wasn't the only one who believed it was possible. The Raiders (4-1) are the No. 1-ranked team in Class 4A, according to pigskinprep.com. They are No. 6 in The Associated Press poll.

The Raiders also found out that senior safety Mason Stone is lost with a torn ACL.

"Tough loss," Rider coach Jim Garfield said. He added "One Family, One Team," which he has made the team motto since he's been there.

The last time this happened to the Raiders was in 2008 when then-star quarterback Shavodrick Beaver went down. Rider went to backup Malcolm Carter and with an improved run game and defense the Raiders won the district championship.

Carter later handed the baton to Barrett, who joined the varsity as a part-time quarterback and all-purpose threat in his sophomore year.

Rider will move on with junior Chase London, who will get his first start on Friday at Lake Dallas.

Barrett finishes his senior season with 92 rushes for 571 yards and seven touchdowns. He was 38-of-71 passing for 764 yards and five touchdowns.

Barrett ran for 1,515 yards and nine touchdowns as a junior. He passed for 1,604 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Barrett's last two home performances were something special. He led a last-minute comeback drive against Amarillo as the Raiders drove 85 yards for the go-ahead touchdown with nine seconds left.

And then he led an offense that was near-perfect in a 50-14 rout of Byron Nelson to open District 5-4A. He had vowed that his team wouldn't start slow in district play after they had done so in 2011 and his team delivered a 496-yard masterpiece.

Barrett's best statistical day of the year didn't make him happy at all. That's because his 178 yards running and 271 yards and two touchdowns in the air at Abilene Cooper came in a 43-36 loss.

He got in front of his team and told them "they were winners and winners didn't lose." He didn't want to be on the short end of the scoreboard again, even if it was a non-district game.

Barrett?s Injury Not as Severe as Expected
By Michael Chung
Earlier in the week, it was reported that J.T. Barrett blew out his knee by tearing his ACL, Meniscus and MCL in a Wichita Falls (Texas) Rider's 44-17 victory over Brewer on Friday night.
This was devastating news for Ohio State fans, who were anxious to see if Barrett could be the future replacement to Braxton Miller in Urban Meyer?s spread offense. While the injury was certainly serious, Barrett planned to get a second a opinion on Wednesday to make sure.
And a second opinion Barrett received. Though still not good news for the 2013 quarterback, or the Buckeyes for that mater, Barrett texted The-Ozone Thursday saying the new diagnosis was a torn ACL and torn lateral meniscus. It?s still a pretty brutal injury, but much better news than originally expected.

We do have the luxury of being able to redshirt him and have him learn the playbook and read better defenses from Braxton and cardale. Hope jt gets better and doesn't rush things. He's going to have a very good career at osu

He has plenty of time. He could end up being a 3 year starter still, and ACL injuries are getting to be like Tommy John. The joint ends up stronger than when it started. It sucks for him that it happened during his senior season, but he already has an offer from a top school and will be given plenty of time to recover in preparation for what could be 3 years of starting at a really high level in college.

With Miller, Guiton, & Jones all back in 2013, my guess he would have redshirted in 2013 even if he wasn't injured.

Great news! Buckeye Nation is behind you J.T.!

Yeah, it's huge that he'll be able to so his rehab under the expert guidance of the OSU medical staff. These type of injuries are rarely career threatening anymore, especially under the guidance of expert physical therapists.

I'm really rooting for JT as I love watching this offense with a QB who can really do damage running the ball.

ACL injuries may have been career ending for 32 year old NFL running backs at one point but I can't remember a time when an ACL injury was considered career ending for a high school QB. He'll be fine.

USA Today - Pick Your Embarrassment - High School Quarterbacks Talk Interceptions

J.T. BARRETT, Rider (Wichita Falls, Texas), 2013

Committed to: Ohio State

Initial reaction: ?I feel like I?m the only guy in the stadium who didn?t see the guy who got the pick. I mean it?s the loneliest feeling in sports. No one?s on your side, no matter what they say. You feel pretty dumb because everyone in the stands is looking at you like ?How in the world did you throw that ball?? It?s so embarrassing, man, I can?t even tell you.?

How to play it off: ?Well, the first thing you?ve got to know is that you can?t play it off. You threw an interception and everyone saw it. You?ve got to take a couple seconds for yourself. I go sit on the bench by myself and think about what I just did. Then on the next series I go out there and I have to throw a touchdown pass. That?s how I play it off; I make them forget I threw the pick.?
