The New Orleans Saints completed what feels like a scheduled transaction on Jan. 2, releasing former Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback J.T. Barrett from their practice squad. Nick Underhill of the Advocate first reported the release. This was, presumably, the corresponding move to the return of rookie defensive lineman Henry Mondeaux.

It was also the 11th time Barrett tested waivers for the 2018 NFL season, and his 22nd transaction on the year since signing with the Saints after the 2018 NFL Draft. Check the full timeline:

Barrett has been a frequent member of the Saints practice squad on days leading up to games, but it’s difficult to nail down why he’s been waived so frequently. One explanation would be that the Saints just prefer having another set of quarterback’s eyes to help review plays from the sideline. Another explanation could be that the Saints know he’s unlikely to get poached by another team, so they use him to fill out the practice squad and open spots for tryout players as needed.

Other teams have gotten creative with spare practice squad spots. Under head coach Bill Belichick, the New England Patriots are known to sign players who roughly match the body types of their next opponents’ stars – like picking up a 6-foot-5 wide receiver when the towering Demaryius Thomas is scheduled to line up against them. That helps condition their defensive backs against a type of opponent they haven’t practiced against often, making the transition to live action against Thomas a little easier.
