I don't think we can underestimate the need to have someone with a little bit of ego/personality/guts in the OC position. I would rather have Urban than not but look at the type of people Herman and Wilson are vs. Warriner/Beck...

I hope this is a "coach if you let us work on these plays we can still be a success" type situation. Because the common thread has been Urban....
And the common thread is that, tOSU under Urban is winning a shit-ton if games. He isn’t perfect and his hands in the offense isn’t ALWAYS a recipe for success, but it’s hard to be anything other than pleased.

You're pleased with a garbage offense the year after you win a national championship with talent that should have at least gotten back to a NC game? Not to mention the losses against PSU, Clemson, OU....

The dudes allowed a loss here or there but when you're on the edge of your seat HOPING you can complete a 10 yard pass there is something wrong with that.

Sure, none of that would say much about him as a quarterback, but his rating would be awesome if they marched downfield for a TD every time.

I'll take it.

One thing I've noted after rewatching both of the past two games is that he seems to be getting more comfortable throwing over the middle and some are in the post area which are further downfield. As long as he keeps seeing this on the field he will be ok. If he turtles, and goes back to his old faithful the way Urbs does with the QB run, we would probably be better off with a replacement. I hope and pray for the former.

JT doesn't kill us with TO's, he's mobile, and can complete long enough throws to pose a threat. The question now is will Wilson & Meyer call the offensive plays that give JT a chance to be successful?

Dropping JT and having him scan the field and try to pick apart a defense is not his strengths. If we do what we did against OU we will get the same results or worse against PSU. We can't run JT more then 12 times, we need to run our two backs, and we need to just keep chipping away at the RPO plays with the occasional shot. I really think JT can be the guy though.

Well, the point is that his junior year was a letdown and he has a lot of confidence building to do under better coaching. Urban Meyer blames O line inexperience for most of the problems last year.

This kid has taken a lot of hits. He needs to trust the line to protect him and the WRs to run their routes. The next three weeks sets up for that.

I am more than pleased with the Meyer tenure at Ohio State. All of it.

I won't go so far as to say it's much to do about nothing but I generally agree.

My feeling is that Wilson seems to have come to grips with what he can and cannot do well (why it took this long is another matter). It's starting to look like Wilson finds himself at IU with a QB who can't throw deep to save his life but is accurate short and has an army of really fast guys for him to distribute to. What would he do but work on the horizontal passing game? Maybe it took so long because urban had the fascination with the deep ball and Wilson (along with the OU debacle) has finally won the argument that it's a fools errand given JT's attributes? We will never know but it's starting to look that way to me.

Regardless of why, I think they are on the right track logically; perfect the crossing routes/bubble screens/RPO packages to go with a very good run game against this 5 week run of weak teams and see if it's enough to beat the good teams.

I don't know if it will be good enough or not but what else are they going to do? Barrett can't throw deep consistently enough. This is a known fact. The only thing that can make that weakness worse is to pretend it doesn't exist.

So if people are going to get upset that Barrett isn't threading the needle 15+ yards downfield on his 70 yard TD's then they just need to get get set for disappointment. He can't do that consistently.

On the flip side, people might want to consider that even the good teams still have to tackle OSU's athletes in space if they can get the short game going.

Well said.

For comparisons sake:

Interesting comparison - but no one has ever claimed that Hurts is more than just an average QB. Most Alabama fans I know cannot wait for the Tagovailoa regime.

Secondly, I would say that Alabama is the only team in the country that can get away with a mediocre QB when playing other elite teams, given their huge talent and coaching advantages.

Given the disparity between how we performed against Clemson, and how Alabama performed against that same Clemson team, I don't think we are in quite the same position as they - what works for them, will not necessarily also work for us.
