QB Devin "Utah" Brown (Transfer to ???)

I agree with most of what you said, except about his play. We've never actually seen him play much, because he's always injured. He was battling McCord in camp, and then gets injured. He's inserted in GL situations to get game reps and save McCord's legs, gets injured. He has his first real opportunity to show the Buckeye and CFB world his talents, and he gets injured mid way through the Cotton Bowl. Are we seeing a theme here?

I like the kid, he has a great leadership personality and I'm sure is a hard worker. But at a place like OSU, if you can't stay healthy there's a guy as talented as you waiting for their shot too. And Brown is a sprained wrist, ankle, etc from being possibly 4th string in this QB room.
Also the same away from being a starter on a National Championship level team

Ohio State Quarterback Devin Brown Feeling “Way More Comfortable” in Year Three

148218_h.jpg

Devin Brown never got a real chance to settle into his second year at Ohio State in 2023.

He saw some backup duty and occasional use in a specialty red zone package the first seven weeks of the season, but he suffered an ankle injury on Oct. 21 against Penn State, aggravated it during warmups trying to return against Michigan State on Nov. 11 and never saw the field again until the Cotton Bowl.

There against Missouri, he went 4-of-6 but for a meager 20 yards behind a struggling offensive line before being knocked out of the game with another ankle injury.

While trying to pull the upset in a quarterback battle with Will Howard, Brown is building more comfort in Ohio State’s offense and playing more freely on the field.

“Way more comfortable,” Brown said. “Being my third year in the offense, I pretty much know everything in and out. So (I’m) not really having to think too much in the installs, I'm just going out and playing.”

Ryan Day Says Devin Brown Would Be Ohio State’s Backup QB if the Season Started Today, but the Competition for the No. 2 Spot Remains Ongoing

Ohio State has its starting quarterback. But the primary backup signal-caller spot remains up for grabs.
Ryan Day anointed Will Howard the team’s Week 1 starter on Thursday, praising the Kansas State transfer for grading out significantly ahead of OSU’s other four scholarship quarterbacks in their practice evaluations.
The Buckeyes have rotated quarterbacks in team drills since spring, letting Devin Brown, Howard, Julian Sayin, Lincoln Kienholz and Air Noland all get their share of reps in team competition. However, Howard, Brown and Sayin took most of the reps with the starters early in camp.
If the season started today, Day said Brown would be the Buckeyes’ No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart. Brown was a major factor in last year’s quarterback competition as well, with Day revealing he actually thought Brown would start Week 1 at this point into fall camp last year before Kyle McCord ultimately pulled away late. Brown still appeared in six games in 2023, completing 16 of 28 passes for 217 yards with two touchdowns and one interception while tacking on 23 yards and a rushing touchdown on the ground.

Devin Brown Will Be Ohio State’s Backup Quarterback to Begin Season

148572_h.jpg
Devin Brown is Ohio State’s next man up at quarterback to begin the 2024 season.

Ryan Day said Tuesday that Brown will be Ohio State’s No. 2 quarterback behind Will Howard for the Buckeyes’ season opener against Akron on Saturday.

Day had said on August 15, the same day he named Howard the Buckeyes’ starting quarterback, that Brown would be the backup quarterback if the season began that day. However, Day left the door open at that time for freshman quarterback Julian Sayin to still win the backup quarterback job, saying that he “for sure” remained in the mix for that position.

If all goes according to plan in Saturday’s season opener, a game the Buckeyes are favored to win by 50 points, Ohio State should have the opportunity to get both Brown and Sayin in the game for some second-half reps once Howard and the first-team offense have built a comfortable lead.

Love the kid but I got a feeling Utah is exactly where he's going to end up. All love for him and Keinholtz both.
Same, I admire him staying here to compete but the truth is that when he has played, his performance is akin to Bauserman. I know he didn't play much last week but we've seen plenty of his play and with another year in the system, I think it is pretty clear Devin will never start here. He constantly misses wide open receivers by a mile and his running ability was oversold. Maybe he looks great in practice (prompting coaches to sing his praises) but in the actual game it is pretty tough to watch.

Just being brutally honest but I want Sayin coming in behind Howard. The best players play and if you don't perform in a game, it is that simple. The Akron game was borderline regression and we have to prepare for our future after Howard leaves, or God forbid this year if he gets injured.

Believe that you've said what most of us believe/want, RB. If Will gets hurt, say second quarter up in Oregon, who ya gonna play? Not talking mop-up duty, but in the heat of battle. History could be made, a la Haskins (against Xichigan), or Kenny G (against Purdue etc), or a freshman (Sayin). Certainly would be a glorious start. Not entirely certain Day & Co would see it this way, but maybe they've seen enough in practice to go with the rookie. Would be nice to be a fly upon the wall, in practice, seeing who Chip and Ryan spend the second most time with.....

Yeah, I like Brown a lot, but there isn't enough being shown to have confidence in him as a backup. The long throw to Ballard wasn't bad, but a junior should put that in the middle of the field so his guy has a better chance at it. That miss to a wide open Ballard on the out was tough to see, though. I imagine he makes some beautiful downfield throws in practice but hasn't improved his consistency. Rooting for him to make a jump and show out on the next drive he gets.

Suspect that's part of the problem... Devin may be looking great in practice... but not the same Devin in game action
Was only a couple passes but both looked like easy passes... incompletes

Live action is a tad different when the DE's etc don't pull up so as not to hurt the guy in the red jersey. Seeing (and feeling) the oncoming rush has to be a bit intimidating. Would guess that the natural tendency is to tuck the ball and run, but standing tall in the pocket and delivering a pin-point pass is why the QBs make the big bucks. The poor QB for Akron did stand tall, and got steam-rolled by Jack. His grimaces of pain on the sideline are testimonies to his courage. Agree with the above. Need more minutes for the 2-3-4 QBs on the team. And NOT simply handing off to RB plunges into the line. They've gotta air it out to accurately determine whether they'll be up to the task of being QB1 for the Ohio State Buckeyes. It is also apparent (to me at least), that the new playoff setup will be in part determined by the points generated, as it appears that teams are running up the scores in an attempt to look good. Don't know if Vegas is helping this outlook along by setting the spread so high. Told one guy to take Akron and the points, as Day wouldn't try to embarass Akron. PS, also thought there should have been at least two more interceptions by the good guys....Go Bucks!
