QB Cornelius Greene (1974 Rose Bowl MVP, 1975 Big Ten MVP)

SKULL SESSION: MARK DANTONIO COMPARES SPARTANS TO 2002 BUCKEYES, CORNELIUS GREENE NAMED TO ROSE BOWL HALL OF FAME, AND DEVIN SMITH RETURNS TO THE LEAGUE

ROSE BOWL LEGEND.
Corny Green was already Rose Bowl royalty, but now it's a formality as the former Buckeye quarterback will be inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame.

From the Pasadena Tournament of Roses:

Cornelius Greene is in a small fraternity of football players who played in four Rose Bowl Games. Greene played for Ohio State in the 1973 Rose Bowl Game, then started in the 1974, 1975 and 1976 games. In the 1974 game, Greene was named MVP in a 42-21 victory over USC. The sophomore quarterback threw for 129 yards and ran for 45 yards and a touchdown. Buckeyes legendary head coach Woody Hayes described the 1974 Rose Bowl Game as “the best game we’ve ever, EVER played.” Greene’s third quarter touchdown run broke a 21-21 tie and gave the Buckeyes a lead they would not relinquish. Greene accumulated 454 yards of offense and scored two touchdowns in the 1975 and 1976 games. The 1975 Chicago Tribune Silver Football award winner as the Big Ten’s best player, Greene was 31-3-1 as a starter and was an eleventh-round draft pick of the Dallas Cowboys in the 1976 NFL Draft.

Greene probably wouldn't crack the list for the top-five Ohio State quarterbacks of all-time, but nobody else on that list has played in four-straight Rose Bowls. Hell, no other Buckeye quarterback has ever played in two-straight Rose Bowls.

Also, if video games were a thing back in 1976, Greene would have been fun as hell to play with. Braxton Miller is basically a cheat code in NCAA14, imagine scrambling around with Corny Greene in NCAA76.

Corny was in a car in the Rose Bowl Parade today that was carrying him, Matt Leinart, Jacque Robinson, and a descendant of Eddie Casey.

ABC's coverage, anchored by ESPN employees Sage Steele and Kevin Neghandi, read off the 4 names of the inductees and then talked briefly about how:

Eddie Casey led his Harvard team to a 7-6 win over Oregon to complete an undefeated season,

Matt Leinhart won the Rose Bowl after the 2004 season and of course played in the great game against Texas that ended up 41-38 the next year, and

Jacque Robinson became the first freshman to win the Rose Bowl MVP for Washington in 1982.

They only talked about 3 of the 4 inductees, one was slighted by the ABC/ESPN coverage. I didn't watch the CBS coverage to see what they said about these 4 players today.

Congrats to Flam on making it into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame and being part of the festivities today. Edit - he should be out there for the coin toss

Just like Ohio State victories over TSUN and Wisky were shifted off the first page of ESPiN coverage.

Hey, Herbstreit! Care to comment, you shill!

The Scarlet and Gray remained at #1, building a perfect 10-0 record as they headed into their annual grudge match against Michigan. Just like in Corny's first three Ohio State-Michigan games, a Big Ten title and Rose Bowl berth were at stake2.

In the first quarter, the visiting Buckeyes went up 7-0 on a touchdown pass from Green to Johnson. Then, thanks in part to a few turnovers—including two interceptions—and a staunch Wolverine defense, Ohio State failed to pick up a first down for two quarters. Michigan took a 14-7 lead in the fourth quarter, but #7 marched his team down the field for the tying score. On that pivotal drive, the once stagnant offense gained 80 yards with a balanced attack of both pass plays and carries.

Shortly thereafter, Ohio State retook possession when Archie's brother, Ray Griffin, picked off UM quarterback Rick Leach. Another Pete Johnson touchdown gave the Buckeyes the lead again with just over two minutes left in the game. That's how it would end, with Ohio State emerging victorious, 21-14.

Just sayin': It brings back great memories as I was at that game.

For the fourth year in a row, the Buckeyes earned a trip to Pasadena. Their struggles on offense that day in Ann Arbor, though, foreshadowed what was to come on January 1, 1976.

In a rematch with UCLA on New Year's Day, #1 Ohio State was the clear-cut favorite. Yet, a national championship would elude them once again. Losing 23-10, Cornelius Green's last game in Scarlet and Gray was nothing short of a disappointment. He threw two interceptions and admitted that neither he, Archie, Pete, nor the offensive line had a great day.

Just sayin': I was at that game too. We were #1, had beaten UCLA earlier in the year, were more than 2 TD favorite, and had a 2 time Heisman Trophy winner. It was disappointing to lose.
