QB CJ Stroud (All B1G, 2022 B1G QB of the Year, All-American, NFL OROY, Houston Texans)

Ohio State records C.J. Stroud could break in 2022

Ohio State's offense was among the most explosive in the country in 2021 and the expectation is to be on a similar level this fall. The main reason for that is the return of third-year quarterback C.J. Stroud.

After winning the starting job last year, Stroud put together a fantastic season for the Buckeyes. Despite not throwing a pass during his true freshman year, the quarterback led the Scarlet and Gray to the top-ranked offense in the country as well as the third-best passing attack nationally. He was a Heisman Trophy finalist, finishing fourth in the voting.

With another offseason in the books to continue to develop his game, the anticipation is that Stroud will be even better in 2022. There is already talk about him being a Heisman Trophy favorite and possibly the top-ranked quarterback in next spring's NFL Draft. This would all require an even bigger season from Stroud than what fans saw in 2021.

Because big things are expected from the Ohio State quarterback, it's only fair to assume that he might break a few records along the way this year -- he's already done so in just one season. Bucknuts looked through the Buckeye passing record books to see where Stroud stands and examine some of the records he could be in line to break come this fall.

Got the wrong link here, that's the game by game prediction story.

TOUCHDOWN PASSES - CAREER
The fact that this is even possible in his second year starting is insane.

Thanks, I fixed it. The Bucknuts site will scroll to other articles. If you go past your article the URL of the new article automatically appears in your address bar.

The article is a good one to read as it explains what Stroud has to do to break the record and likelihood of him doing it. Breaking the 104 Career TD Passes in the 2022 season is a really long shot though:

TOUCHDOWN PASSES - CAREER
Current record: J.T. Barrett, 2014-17 - 104 touchdowns

Barrett is at the top of a number of these lists because he was a player who played quarterback for Ohio State for four seasons. So for any player to break his career records given that it's rare to see a Buckeye quarterback play four seasons would take something special.

As mentioned prior, Stroud threw 44 touchdowns last season, meaning he's on pace for 88 for his career. But if we expect he will play at least 14 games next year, he jumps to 95 based on his per-game numbers. That's still a ways off Barrett and even an additional national championship game would still have him at 98 touchdowns based upon his per-game average.

This record is possible if Stroud has a monster season, but unlikely.

I do not want to see this record broken. It probably means the run game is subpar.
If he plays in 15 games, he'd average 36 passes a game...if he plays in 14 games, he'd average 38 passes a game. He threw 441 passes in 12 games last year--which is almost 37 passes a game--and keep in mind he was pulled out early in several games. So, if he keeps his passing rate unchanged and we play in the national title game, he could very possibly break the record.

If the defense upgrades all the way from where it was to “competent”, then the number of games in which Stroud sits most of the 2nd half probably doubles from last year. I’m going to guess that his rating and qbr will keep him in the discussion for post-season honors, but the number of attempts will protect some of the records he might otherwise have broken

During an appearance on ESPN’s This Just In, Matt Miller spoke about his preference for CJ Stroud over Bryce Young heading into the 2022 season.

“I think it honestly comes down to size,” said Miller. “We’re talking about CJ Stroud, who’s 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, versus Bryce Young, who is listed at 6-foot and 194 pounds. Did you guys see him at the Heisman ceremony? He does not look 6-foot and 194 pounds, so I think we might see what those real numbers are real soon. And that could hurt Bryce Young. He’s a point guard at the position, he’s a natural distributor of the ball, he’s got great field vision.

“But CJ Stroud, that size, that arm strength. Remember in the Rose Bowl game? Almost 600 yards passing, six touchdowns. Utah couldn’t stop him even though everyone knew where they were going with the ball. So I think CJ Stroud at least enters the year with the most momentum and with the best overall traits in what looks like a loaded quarterback class.”

I’ll be honest, I was one of those people. Just goes to show why Ryan Day gets paid an obscene salary to exercise judgement and patience and I don’t.

I was too. He looked like a deer in headlights early on despite some solid numbers. I thought he was going to be Todd Boeckman 2.0, just more talented. Needless to say, it feels good to be wrong

I thought he had a messed up shoulder. For the first couple of game he was constantly rotating it after a throw.

He did sit out a game. Akron, maybe? Was that why? (I forget.)
I think his only problem was that he'd be scrambling and he'd have a wide open run available for 10 yards, easy. Then he'd pull back and find an open receiver for 15 yards.
