COLUMBUS - Even though Ohio State shunned the passing game during Woody Hayes' long coaching career, Bob Hoying was surprised to learn how few quarterbacks had preceded him into OSU's Athletic Hall of Fame.

The St. Henry High School graduate is one of 12 former athletes being inducted into the Hall of Fame tonight. They also will be introduced at halftime of Saturday's Ohio State-Ohio University football game.

"It's not something you think about when you're 35," he said, about joining the Hall of Fame.

"When I started finding out more about it, that there are only two other true quarterbacks in the Hall of Fame, to be in their company and to be really the first modern-day sort of quarterback to go in is a tremendous honor."

Hoying was a three-year starter at Ohio State. He is Ohio State's career leader in touchdown passes (57) and ranks second on the career list in passing yards (7,232), passing yards in a season (3,269) and touchdown passes in a season (29).

His 1995 season - when he completed 61 percent of his passes for 3,269 yards and 29 TDs -helped Ohio State set team season records that still stand for points scored and yards gained.

The only Ohio State players who spent their entire careers at quarterback voted into the Hall of Fame before him were Cornelius Greene in 1998 and Rex Kern in 1978.

OSU ON SUNDAY
TODAY: QUARTERBACKS
Saturday, October 10, 2009
BY RAY STEIN

Bobby Hoying

As a Buckeye

Three-year starter (1993-95) who still holds OSU's career record for completions (498), touchdown passes (57) and 200-yard passing games (16). He made all-Big Ten directing OSU's high-powered 1995 offense.

As a pro

His five-season total of 2,544 yards ranks third among OSU alums in the NFL. Hoying finished his career with 11 touchdown passes and 15 interceptions for Philadelphia and Oakland.

The skinny

After a decent '97 season with the Eagles (1,573 yards, 11 TDs, six interceptions), Hoying bombed in '98, going 1-6 as a starter with no TDs and nine picks as Philly finished 3-13 and Ray Rhodes was fired. Hoying went to the Raiders before real estate beckoned.

Hoying Gives Buckeyes A Pep Talk
By Tom Archdeacon | Saturday, October 24, 2009

COLUMBUS ? The Ohio State football team got an inspirational pep talk before Saturday?s game with Minnesota from former Bucks quarterback Bobby Hoying, who may have been standing in front of the entire group, but seemed to be speaking specifically to current QB Terrelle Pryor.

Hoying ? now a real estate agent in Columbus following his OSU and NFL days ? was the Buckeyes honorary captain Saturday.

?I told ?em playing quarterback at Ohio State comes with its share of criticisms when you don?t win,? said Hoying, the St. Henry product who was chosen to the Buckeyes All Century team and still remains the all-time career leader in completions (498) and touchdown passes (57) and is second to Art Schlicter in career passing yards.

?I just talked to the guys about my junior year here and how we got beat early and then came back and had a good year.?

Asked if he feels for Pryor ? who received considerable criticism after turning the ball over four times in last Saturday?s loss to lowly Purdue ? Hoying said the scrutiny is something all Bucks quarterbacks have experienced:

Hoying: All Bucks quarterbacks have faced scrutiny

?It comes with the territory. Anybody who?s played quarterback here knows what it?s like. It was no different for any of us.

?Terrelle Pryor has all the tools and eventually it will start clicking for him.?

Bobby Hoying's flop serves as warning to Philadelphia Eagles' quarterback Kevin Kolb
Published: Sunday, August 08, 2010
The Patriot-News The Patriot-News

Like Kolb, Hoying once looked like the Eagles? long-term answer at quarterback. Instead, he serves as something of a cautionary tale, his career having unraveled as quickly as it came together.

But the comparison ends there, said former Eagles running back Duce Staley, who played alongside Hoying and during training camp this year is serving as a coaching intern for the Birds. The situation is ?kind of different? with Kolb, he insisted.

Kolb would appear to have a better supporting cast around him than Hoying, who burst onto the scene in 1997 but flopped in ?98. He was out of Philadelphia by the fall of ?99, out of football by the fall of 2002.

Staley also noted that Kolb has had three years to prepare for his debut as the full-time starter ? three years to learn from Donovan McNabb, to soak up the system, to get everything down pat.

Hoying, a third-round pick out of Ohio State in 1996, became a regular late in his second season.

?He was,? Staley said, ?just thrown out there: ?Go. Go, be great. Do justice. Make the city of Philadelphia proud of you.? ?

Ty Detmer and Rodney Peete split the quarterbacking duties in the first 10 games of the ?97 season, which also happened to be Staley?s rookie year.

Hoying played well in relief against San Francisco, then started the last six games, throwing for 1,573 yards and 11 touchdowns. Particularly noteworthy was his 313-yard, four-TD effort in a 44-42 victory over Cincinnati, seeing as he had grown up in Ohio idolizing Bengals QB Boomer Esiason.

That late-season run would prove to be the high-water mark of Hoying?s professional career. Installed by coach Ray Rhodes as the opening-week starter the following year, Hoying played miserably, failing to throw a single touchdown pass while being intercepted nine times in seven starts. He was benched late in the season, with the Eagles en route to a 3-13 finish.

9. BOBBY HOYING, 1995
As a senior, Bobb Hoying played on one of the greatest Ohio State teams ever. With Terry Glenn out wide and Eddie George in the backfield, the Buckeyes' offense was deadly. Hoying helped Glenn have the greatest season by a wide receiver in program history, throwing for over 9.5 yards per pass attempt (second in school history) with a passer rating of 163.4 (fifth in school history).

Hoying ended his career with the most career completed passes in Ohio State history (498 completions), beating Art Schlichter's mark by one completion, and passing touchdowns (57 TDs).
