Yeah, I would have taken the faceplate off anywhere. But in my driveway? In the burbs?! Something tells me even if I took the faceplate off it would still be gone. Heck, something tells me I could have done ANYTHING and it would still have been stolen, cause the bastard knew where I lived. From what I've heard detachable faceplates do little to discourage theft. In a $300 headunit, the faceplate costs ~$90. If the dude wants to keep the headunit for himself, he could just as easily swipe one at a store display (or if he worked at best buy like this bastard probably did) he could just steal one from a retail store.
I was 99% sure that within 8-10 months, it would get stolen (esp. in my parking lot at osu). My only defense would have been to take the stuff out when not being used, tint the windows, get a security system, etc. But I didn't have time to add all that stuff in a week.
If I make a claim on the stereo, insurance might give me back the retail price for the system. Since I got all of it on ebay, then I might be able to come out with extra cash. Problem is, if I make a claim, will they rape me with higher rates?
The detective called back, btw...apparently my crackpot theory wasn't so crackpot after all. Times like this I wish they gave out licenses for vigilante justice...
