Trent Luyster struck out a career-high 10 batters despite the loss to Purdue.

    April 8, 2005

    Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State was within two runs entering the ninth inning, but Purdue used a pair of hits and two errors to get past the Buckeyes 7-1 Friday night to spoil the Big Ten home opener for the Scarlet and Gray. Ohio State has now lost six straight games and dropped to 0-5 in the conference.

Trailing 3-1 entering the ninth, OSU starter Trent Luyster (Sr., Flushing, Ohio/Harrison Central) gave up back-to-back one-out singles to prompt head coach Bob Todd to go to his bullpen, bringing in Trey Fausnaugh (So., Circleville, Ohio/Westfall). Tyler Heck sent a ground ball to OSU first baseman Paul Farinacci, who tried to nab a runner at second, but instead, the errant throw allowed Spencer Ingaldson to score. A walk to Mike Coles loaded the bases and Eric Osborn, who had one of the two singles earlier in the inning, scored on a wild pitch. Fausnaugh struck out John Phegley, but a fielding error by third baseman Chris Macke (Fr., Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute) allowed both Heck and Coles to score as the Boilermakers built a six-run lead.

The Buckeyes went in order in the ninth, just like they had in four other innings. In fact, Ohio State did not have a hit after the fifth inning. Its biggest inning of the game was when it scored its lone run in the second inning on three hits. Cody Caughenbaugh (Jr., Newark, Ohio/Licking Valley) added a hit in the fourth and Mike Rabin (Sr., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) delivered a double in the fifth. The Buckeye left only five base runners in the game, three of which were in scoring position.

Ohio State had five hits compared to eight for Purdue. Scott Byrnes gave up one run on five hits and struck out three in seven innings of work to improve to 2-3 on the year, while Trae Dauby came in to pick up his first save of the season. Luyster pitched a solid game, striking out a career-high 10 batters, but did not get the run support he needed, losing his second straight game. He is now 4-3 on the year. Luyster struck out the side in the third and seventh innings.

After a scoreless first inning, Purdue jumped on the Buckeyes for two runs in the top of the second. Luyster hit Eric Wolfe to lead off the inning. Ingaldson singled to center with one out to put runners at first and second for Osborn, who singled up the middle to score Wolfe and Heck's sacrifice bunt scored Ingaldson to give the Boilermakers a 2-0 lead.

Ohio State got one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning. Jedidiah Stephen (Jr., Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah) doubled with one out and then scored on a double by Paul Farinacci (Sr., Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura) to pull within one run.

Osborn led off the fifth inning with a single to left-center and went to second on a passed ball. After a fly out and a pop out, John Phegley doubled down the left-field line to plate Osborn and extend the Purdue lead to two runs, 3-1. Osborn was 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Ingaldson was 2-for-4 and scored twice to lead the Boilermakers.

The Buckeyes, now 13-10 overall, had not started 0-5 in the Big Ten since 1936 when they began 0-9. The five-game league losing skid is the longest since the 1987 season, when they lost six in a row.

The teams continue the series with a doubleheader Saturday at 1:05 p.m. before concluding the series Sunday with a single game at 1:05 p.m. The Sunday game will be broadcast on NPR 820 (WOSU-AM) while all three games will broadcast on the Internet at www.wosu.org.

    Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to come from behind and beat Purdue 6-4 Saturday at Bill Davis Stadium. The victory snapped a six-game losing streak, was the first win in the Big Ten this year and was the 700th victory at Ohio State for 18th-year head coach Bob Todd.

Paul Farinacci (Sr., Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura) led off the fifth inning with a single up the middle and then went to third on a single through the left-side by Chris Macke (Fr., Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute North). Farinacci stayed at third when Macke was picked off trying to get to second, but scored on a sacrifice fly by Jacob Howell (So., Ashland, Ohio/Ashland). With two out, Mike Rabin (Sr., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) got the rally started with a single through the left side. Steve Caravati (Sr., Dover, Ohio/Dover) followed with a single to left and then Cody Caughenbaugh (Jr., Newark, Ohio/Licking Valley) tied the game with a single to right that scored Rabin.

Jason Zoeller (So., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy) gave the Buckeyes a 6-3 lead with his fourth home run of the season, a towering shot to left field that scored three and helped his team put a win on the left-hand side of the won-loss column for the first time since March 30 against Toledo. Purdue added one run in the top of the seventh to pull within the two-run final.

The home run was Zoeller's lone hit but gave him three RBI for the game. Macke had his best game of the season in going 3-for-3, and Caravati and Farinacci each had two hits and scored once as the Buckeyes out-hit Purdue 11-8. Mitch Hilligoss led Purdue with two hits. Neither team had an error.

Purdue struck first, getting one run in the top of the second inning. Eric Wolfe led off the inning with a single to left, went to second on a passed ball and to third on a ground out before scoring on a single to left-center by Spencer Ingaldson.

The Buckeyes even the score in the bottom of the inning, rallying with two outs to score the run. Jedidiah Stephen (Jr., Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah) got things started with a single to center and then Farinacci reached on an infield single to put two runners on for Macke, who singled through the left side to plate Stephen.

The Boilermakers scored twice in the third inning. Luebke walked John Phegley to lead off the inning. He went to second when Andy Dahl reached on a bunt single. Mitch Hilligoss moved both runners up with his sacrifice bunt. Phegley scored on a fielder's choice by Neal Gorka that was scooped up by Farinacci, the Buckeye first baseman, who tried to get Phegley at home, but the throw was not in time. A wild pitch scored Dahl to give the Boilermakers a 3-1 lead.

Ohio State and Purdue finish out the doubleheader later today before concluding the series Sunday with a single game at 1:05 p.m. The game will be broadcast on NPR 820 (WOSU-AM) and both games will be on the Internet at www.wosu.org.

Madsen struck out six Boilermakers in a complete game victory.

    April 9, 2005

    Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Jacob Howell was 2-for-2 and batted in two runs and Mike Madsen pitched his first complete game to guide Ohio State to a 5-1 triumph over Purdue in game two to complete the doubleheader sweep of the Boilermakers Saturday in front of 2,667 fans at Bill Davis Stadium.

Howell, a sophomore from Ashland, Ohio (Ashalnd), drove in two runs in the bottom of the second inning to give the Buckeyes a 2-0 lead. Both runs scored with two outs in the inning. Paul Farinacci (Sr., Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura) singled through the left side to get the rally started. He went to second on a base hit to center field by Eric Fryer (Fr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg). Purdue starter Brent Coudron hit Chris Macke (Fr., Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute North) to load the bases for Howell.

Purdue cut the lead to one run in the top of the fourth inning. Andy Dahl led off with a double to right-center field and then went to third on a wild pitch by Madsen, a senior from Canfield, Ohio (Notre Dame Cathedral Latin). With one out, Dahl crossed the plate on a ground out by Neal Gorka to pull within a 2-1 score.

In the bottom of the fifth, Ohio State was able to add another pair of runs. After doubling to lead off the inning, Macke scored on a hit and an error to put the Buckeyes up by two runs. Howell beat out his bunt down the third-base line, but Mike Marx's throw was well wide of first and Macke was able to score, while Howell went to second. A second bunt, this time by Mike Rabin (Sr., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East), moved Howell to third and a sacrifice fly by Steve Caravati (Sr., Dover, Ohio/Dover) allowed him to score to put the Buckeyes up by three.

Fryer singled up the middle with two out in the sixth to bring home Farinacci for another run of insurance.

Madsen went the distance for the first time this season and struck out six in his seven-inning outing. He allowed only four hits that produced Purdue's lone run. The victory was the 19th career win for Madsen, who evened his record at 2-2. Brent Coudron (2-3) got the loss for Purdue, which fell to 9-16 overall and 3-4 in the Big Ten.

Farinacci and Macke each had four hits between the two games Saturday. Farinacci was 2-for-3 in each game, while Macke, who is filling in a third base for an injured Ronnie Bourquin (So., Canton, Ohio/Canton South), was 3-for-3 in game one and 1-for-2 in game two.

The doubleheader sweep for Ohio State ended a string of six straight losses, which was the longest losing skid for the Buckeyes since 1995 when they lost eight straight games early in the season. The 0-5 conference start was the team's worst beginning since 1936 when it lost its first nine conference games. The win in game one of the doubleheader was the 700th victory at Ohio State for head coach Bob Todd, who is in his 18th season.

Ohio State, now 15-10 overall and 2-5 in the Big Ten, and Purdue conclude the series Sunday with a single game at 1:05 p.m. The game will be broadcast on NPR 820 (WOSU-AM) and on the Internet at www.wosu.org. Dan DeLucia (So., Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) will pitch for the Buckeyes in the series finale.
