I cannot help but jump in.

The ferocious "pre-rendered or not" war here is the biggest nerd battle ever. EVER. :)

I am holding out for the PS3, personally. Mostly because: 1) I haven't played in months and don't have much time to - no rush, and 2) my only gamer friends have PS2s and are die-hard for that line; I need to be able to play the sporting games against them.

I already have the full sound system and HDTV. Just waiting. . .

I'm ok with waiting for the PS3, for two reasons...

1. I want them to work out all of the problems. I don't want them rushing it to just get it out and it doesn't work up to its full ability. This includes working out the bugs and other problems.

2. Plus, I don't have the money to buy it right now anyway.:wink2:

November in Japan... I'm willing to bet it doesn't come out before X-Mas in the United States. Giving the 360 two christmas's without competition.

Nope, released worldwide in November....

Here is the latest....looks like November 06 worldwide release......

PlayStation 3 Launching in November
Source: Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.
March 15, 2006

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) announced today that it would launch PlayStation 3 (PS3) in early November 2006 in Japan, North America and Europe simultaneously. With a monthly production capacity of one million units, SCEI will push forward a powerful product launch to spread the platform rapidly throughout the world, together with a strong and attractive lineup of PS3 game titles.

PS3 incorporates the final specifications of BD (Blu-ray Disc), and with the overwhelming computing power of PS3, it enables playback of BD software at a high bit rate. With a maximum storage capacity of 50 GB (dual layer) and robust security, BD is a highly anticipated storage medium that delivers digital entertainment content such as games and movies at an unparalleled level of image quality.

PS3 is compatible with a vast lineup of television sets currently out in the market, from standard-definition TV to full high-definition TV.

Users can also connect PS3 to high-speed broadband network through Gigabit Ethernet and comfortably enjoy a wide-range of rich and exciting content and services over the network.

SCEI, together with the support and cooperation of game content creators around the world, will strongly promote the creation of a new world of computer entertainment available on PS3.

so much for Sony taking their time and being too good for a buggy console... you're kidding yourselves if you do not think they are rushing this thing to production.

Have there been any estimates of the price of the PS3? I'm thinking the Blu-ray disk and 50 gig harddrive are going to be quite expensive to produce.

And on the gameplay, no there hasn't been any gameplay footage but I would expect to see something in May at E3.

somewhere around 400 i believe.. no offical price yet obviously but it should be in the 400 dollar ball park.. the HD will be 60 gigs too:

Per IGN

As part of the PlayStation Business Brief today in Tokyo, Ken Kutaragi confirmed that the PlayStation 3 will require a hard drive peripheral for games. Developers are being told to create games with the assumption that a hard disk will be present.

"The hardware was developed with the hard disk in mind," Kutaragi said.

Earlier, we mistakenly reported that Sony had confirmed plans to include the hard disk with the PS3 right out of the box. Kutaragi actually stopped short of confirming this, leaving it as an area of speculation for now. He did state that Sony hopes to avoid a situation where some systems have the drive and others don't (Kutaragi didn't mention Xbox 360, but he was probably thinking it).

A little more info.....

PS Biz Brief 06: PS3 Online Service Update

Sony plans a fully featured Online service for PS3.

By Anoop Gantayat, Mar 15, 2006

Sony Computer Entertainment's answer to Xbox Live is at last coming into light. While previous comments from company executives were unclear on the matter, company president Ken Kutaragi today assured members of the press, 3rd party companies and investors that the PS3 would be seeing a service similar to Microsoft's.
The service, which is currently going under the working name of "PlayStation Network Platform," will see its service kick off at the PS3 launch in November. Basic service will be free of charge initially, although it should be noted that Kutaragi did not comment on what exactly constitutes "basic service." Business will take place on the open internet, suggesting that the service will be more open than Xbox Live.
The service will offer full support for Online title development, providing necessary functions and services for commerce and community. Sony made note of some of the major features that all Online titles will be able to access:
Communication/Community:
Voice/Video chat
Messaging
Lobby/Matchmaking
Score/Ranking
Friend list/Avatar
Game data upload/download
Commerce:
Shop (accessible from inside games)
Content Download
Micro Payment
Subscription
Entitlement (user access rights) management
Account:
User Registration
Login ID/Handling of name issues
Sony didn't announce an Xbox Arcade style game download system, but it did state that games will be bootable from the hard disk, noting this as part of the commerce opportunities for the system.
Sony Computer Entertainment will take care of investment and operation of a commonly used infrastructure. However, SCE will be allowing licensees to connect their own game servers to the network. SCE's network, with data centers throughout the world, is being developed in conjunction with Sony Online Entertainment.
Kutaragi's comments from today's PlayStation Business Briefing in Tokyo set the framework for a hefty Online system on Sony's next generation beast. There's still room for speculation, though, so we encourage you to take to the message boards and speculate away.
