PS3 Madden Online Franchise Discussion Thread

Someone I know PSN'd me last night and asked about Madden franchises. I gave him this site. He should be checking it out in the next day or two and may join. He says he isn't too good, so Fanatic, show mercy.

Don't assume I'm going to be worth a nickel in Madden. I can't seem to get the hang of it. I'm too impatient I think. Defense I'm okay, offensively I can't run and complete 50% of my passes at best.

Concerning free agents, I figured a practical rule would be to allow a team to sign them during the season only to replace an injured player. You can do whatever in the offseason, but we all know how easy it is to manipulate free agency and the salary cap.

I think we should be allowed a few cut/signs during the season (maybe 3 per season? or something like that)

like me, I need a HB with some speed, Cedric Benson sucks balls

Cedric Benson broke about ten tackles on his way to a 42 yard TD against me last night.

But I am open to discussion on this. Should we leave teams basically as-is, have as many FA as wanted, or have a cap on them?

I think it should just be within reason, liking picking up say 20 free agents over the course of a season is just bogus

5 non injury related pickups is probably a fair cap

Is there a waiver system built in already? I simmed a season last night just to do the draft and I definitely need to figure out the free agent system because I just simmed that part to get to the draft...

My problem with free agency is that there's no salary cap and really no contracts. You can just sign who you want. I think everybody and his brother wants to sign Chris McAllister. The way the Online Franchise works, it's first come/first served. The first guy to log in and sign him gets him, and there's no salary cap or contract to even make it difficult. Basically, if you have the room on your roster, you can just snatch him up. Also, the players you have will stay with you until they retire, you release them, or you trade them away. Some of the OFs at OperationSports have a point system or a draft system for Free Agents. Here's one that Fanatic showed me:

Preseason Free Agency

After much consideration, we will not worry about salary caps until the first offseason. Consider Year 1 an uncapped year. It's going to be challenging enough to actually finish a season, let alone worrying about a salary cap along the way. We will run this season the way I originally intended, and when we get to the offseason, we'll hopefully by then have a very workable Salary Cap system in place.

What this means is that preseason free agency will follow a draft-like format, following what will be the initial Waiver Priority List. The list will be constructed by the team's overall rating. Lowest team is first, highest is last. Ties were broken by coin toss.

I will be posting a thread dedicated to the preseason free agency draft soon. Each team will have 24 hours to make a selection. When making a selection, you must indicate which player to release if you don't have an available roster spot. If a team does not make a pick, we will move on to the next team. This draft will go no longer than 3 rounds.

Each subsequent season's beginning waiver priority list order will mimic what the NFL draft order was, minus any trades.

In-Season Free Agency

You may only claim a free agent in-season to replace an injured player. No other In-Season Free Agency will be allowed. To claim a player, send me a PM indicating the player you want to add and the one you want to drop. In the event that two or more teams are both attempting to claim the same player, the team with the lowest win/loss percentage will be awarded that player.

Trades

There will be no trade approval process. You're all adults. I trust you. If two teams agree to a trade, then the trade goes through, no questions asked.

Draft picks WILL be tradeable for the current year's draft only. If two teams agree to a trade involving draft picks, the pick's original owner will choose on behalf of the pick's new owner, and that player will then be transferred to the new team by the commissioner. We will track all draft pick trades through a dedicated thread here on the forums.

We will observe the real life NFL's trading deadline of Week 6. No trades may be made after Week 6's games have been played.

Offseason Free Agency

Still to be determined but will follow some form of a salary cap.

Sim Schedule

We will be simming twice a week utilizing the following schedule:

  • Thursday at 1pm eastern
  • Saturday at 11pm eastern
Please note that I have a job that often requires me to work late on Saturday nights, so there will be some weeks when I don't get around to the Saturday sim until early Sunday morning (1 or 2am, etc).

The Online Franchise does not allow you to play a human vs. human game versus the CPU. Therefore, all games not played at the end of the sim week will be simmed.

I fully expect there to be a handful of unplayed games for me to sim at the end of each week. This is fine. I completely understand that people are busy and I trust that you will do all you can to play as many of your games as possible.

As the season progresses and games become more important, we may slow the sim schedule down a bit to allow for more human vs. human games.

We WILL NOT sim any playoff games unless it's absolutely necessary. Once the playoffs roll around, we'll wait for each game to be played before moving on.

I like those rules. I really like this game. I didnt think I would after the way Matt Cassell torched the BearsD in the first half of my first game. I was down 21-3. Ended up winning 27-24 with a game ending FG. My second game I played GreenBay. I smoked them 48-14. I played using the settings on the previous page. I really like the 11 minute quarters with the clock run off.

It is something I read about before the game came out. That the commish can make free agency more of a waiver thing or a 'free agent draft' to make things fair.

Also Olaf, have you checked out the online functions that are available? I haven't, but wondering how much info is out there.
