PS3 $400+, last for decade

PS3 expected to live 10 years in the market? >

Besides the original Game Boy platform, no system has ever lasted 10 years in the market. Pretty much straight up like that. But that apparently didn’t stop Sony Computer Entertainment Prez Kenny Kutaragi from stating at PlayStation Meeting 2005 that they’re “looking at a life cycle of 10 years with the PlayStation 3” due to the transition to HDTV. Uh, ok, that’s a little oblique—so how do they plan to accomplish this? Why, with “full HD features from the start so that consumers won’t have to buy another version of the console in the future.” Ahem. And what are we to conclude from this? Well, perhaps the money is in Ken’s quote that “the PS3 can’t be offered at a price that’s targeted towards households,” and, “I’m not going to reveal its price today. I’m going to only say that it’ll be expensive.” Sorry for all the quotes, but we’re just laying it down—with previous estimates hovering at about $400 per unit, should we take this as a possibility that the PS3 is getting a big price bump in the wrong direction, and might just perhaps be classing itself right out of the market? Hope not, but we don’t even know what to expect anymore—execs tend not to whine about their gear being too expensive if at all possible.

You're missing the bigger picture.

PS2 owned a superior Xbox console due to being put out earlier. PS3 is already gonna be playing catchup to Xbox360, and if it is $400+ like many expect, they are gonna be even further behind.

Main game consoles won't last more than 3-5 years because constant improvements in gaming speed and image resolution demand huge leaps in processing power and memory. Unless Sony plans on selling upgrade kits to keep up with speed/memory demands, they will be forced to release PS4 waaaay before the 10-year mark. Nintendo released new systems almost exactly every 5 years...the original NES came out in Jun, 1985; the SNES in Aug, 1991; Nintendo 64 in Sep, 1996; and Game Cube in Nov, 2001. There's no way that Sony, or anyone else, can keep a game console adequate for a decade.

I'm sure that the $400+ will even the field, but many people won't even blink while paying that. Brand loyalty will keep Xbox from getting too far ahead.

I haven't read the upgrades these new systems boast. And unless Xbox 360 is signifigantly superior to the PS3, I'll be getting the Sony. I don't know why I just don't care for Xbox.

Yes there will be many who blindly will choose a PS3, because its made by sony.

Those who have played on both consoles regularly understand that the xbox is superior in most ways (which isn't a fair battle cuz it came out later), and is preferrable for most cross-platform games (not including NCAA, which the programmers decided should not be ported well to xbox). You can decide that you like certain Sony games better, or can't get used to teh xbox controller, but the original arguments just don't hold water anymore.

Playstation fans can no longer claim the xbox doesn't have good games, or that the controllers suck (the ps2 ones are not nearly as ergonomic, and the dual trigger advantage will be gone next generation), etc.

For me, I CANNOT STAND using a memory card, that can hold so little info and takes so long to save. You could play 200 games on an Xbox and not fill up 5% of the hard drive... plus it loads and saves almost instanteously usually.

PS3 may have better specs. But you keep telling yourself that while the rest of us play NCAA & Madden on next generation consoles for a year or two before PS3 finally comes out for 50-100% more $$.

Keep in mind that Xbox will probably be $250, and come with a game and maybe a 2nd controller by that time.

Also, PS3 has a huge competitor in Halo3. That will be an unbelievably huge selling point for xbox, in addition to being able to play all of the EA Games in next-gen graphics long before PS3.

All for $100-150 less than PS3, allowing your parents to buy you three more games if they are as rich as you claim and won't blink at spending $400...

...keep in mind that they will be shelling out for HDTVs to fully appreciate the quality of these consoles... not leaving tons of extra cash lying around.

I skipped the whole PS1 generation and the PS2 and Xbox where the choices when my brother was looking for a game system 3-4 years ago. He bought an Xbox and never looked back. I don't know how anyone would say that they would rather have a PS2 to an Xbox. I've played Tiger Woods on both and the Xbox load times are at least 4 times faster. Personally I don't like the PS controller. GTA isn't a good enough reason for me to get a PS2. I'm sure my brother will be the first person in line for the 360 when it comes out.

Jwinslow, perhaps you should check out this thread, many of the things you seem to not like about the ps2 may be fixed in ps3

I'm not necessarily anti-PS3... I just get ticked by those who blindly love PS2 even now when it seems pretty clear which console is better if money is no object (and as I said earlier, its not really a fair fight, considering release dates).

The hard drive is the biggest thing about the Xbox that still does not appear in the PS2.

If PS2 users had a hard drive, then NCAA 2006 would be able to add a weekly highlights section like ESPN NFL 2k5 did (in that game, highlights from the games would be stored and shown on a virtual sportscenter after each week).

That would enable the Heisman candidates to have highlight reels from big plays during the season (the game could store their best 5 plays or whatever).

But thanks to the lack of a HD on the PS2, this isn't an option for the programmers doing PS2 & Xbox games.

now that statement is true.

tell me it wouldn't be sweet to be able to have replays in NCAA 2006... that was the biggest thing I wished NCAA 06 had (they could have programmed it and then stuck it to you suckers without added HDs)

Here's what I don't get, so correct me anywhere if I am wrong:

Many xbox fans like the xbox better because it has superior hardware. They think everyone should own an xbox.

Many of these same xbox fans then say that everyone should buy the xbox360 instead of the ps3, even though the ps3 will have superior hardware.

The logic in that escapes me. . .

(nevermind, I get it. for the next generation it is a money/timing thing - no longer a hardware thing).

FWIW, I will get a ps3 only because my buddies are getting that. I gotta keep the online sports wars going. I do wish I had an x-box right now for my brand-spanking-new hdtv though.

From looking at the specs for the PS3 it doesn't look that much better than the 360 (if any). Noted I don't know much about game systems, but I highly doubt that the PS3 will blow away the 360 like the xbox did to the PS2. Load time on the only game that I've played on both of them is 4 times faster on the xbox.
