terry hoeppner was a great coach at miami, its hard to be a decent program when you have ohio state in your state taking all the recruits and attention.
I think "great" might be a little stretched...you could say the same thing about a school like Xavier in basketball and a man named That Matta made it happen and faced not only ohio state but cincy and dayton to name others with good recruiting. Hoeppner is not on that level by any means

Same way Urban Meyer was talked about when he left a Mac School after having some success.

Yeah but Meyer went to Utah......Hoeppner went to Indiana. Meyer had free reign out there from a recruiting standpoint. Hoeppner has OSU, Michigan, Northwestern, Illinois, Mich. St, and Louisville all within a couple hundred mile radius. That makes it a bit harder to recruit big name guys right away.

I wasnt saying he was going to win. The ? was how did he become a great coach. If you win in the mac for a couple years you become a hot name on the coaching radar.

Yeah, but I think the whole notion of someone being a great coach coincides with the amount of talent that they have that fits their system.

i dont think that is necessarily true. if you win, but you dont have a bunch of talent on the team, but rather role players willing to do whatever it takes to win, this doesnt make them a bad coach. this might make them an even greater coach due to the fact that they can win without the talent or win with whatever talent they have.

Not a bad point. Contrast that with the experience of Willingham at ND. Won with Davie's kids, then couldn't recruit or sufficiently motivate / coach his squad.

An "Emperor has no clothes" scenario.
