Professional recruiters

DEBuckeye

It ain't easy, bein' cheesy.
Does anyone know of any professional recruiters, headhunters, etc. in Ohio? I am interested in checking out the job situation in either Columbus, Cincy, or Cleveland. Any help would be appreciated.

I suspect you already know this but check out MRI Network and Robert Half. They are national but can help you with location specific searches. If you have the background there seem to be CFO jobs everywhere. Do you know SOX?

Try FinanceLadders also. $100 for six months, they can help you network with recruiters in your area of expertise.

One of my businesses is HH.. but for stock brokers... Virtually NONE of the positions I recruit for ever have a listing...

you really don't want a HH... because 86% of all jobs filled ever had a published listing... and the listings that do get published are for mid to lower levels... NETWORKING is your key...

Plus a HH will want a resume... and a resume is a job BLOCKER... not a ticket for an interview...

My best suggestion... go buy a book.. either Through The Brick Wall by Wendelton or Rites of Passage at $100,000 by Lucht .. great books that will be of IMMENSE help in your career management

Why is a resume a job blocker?
Because the purpose of gathering resumes is to weed people out. They're often only given cursory glances, and even just sending a resume in a style that isn't preferred (too long, too short, wrong font, whatever) can rule you out before they even get to the actual qualifications.

If you have some connection within an organization, the odds of actually getting an interview skyrocket.

You will get alot of advice on this subject and it will vary by the person and their situation.

I would suggest you identify where you want to live and what you want to do. What are your strengths? What is your brand, in other words what do you do or have that would make companies want to hire you, especially over someone else? I am sure you have been at one company for a long time so you may want to get several resume companies to give you some feedback on your resume and look at their sample resumes. Show what you did for the company, not just job title and basic job functions. I have just reworked / updated mine and it has generated some interest.

If a company is using your resume to screen you out you have to ask yourself is this a company I really want to work for? On-line job search sites get 1000's of resumes for each job posted. Most I understand are not even qualified.

NJ is right, many jobs go unadvertised. Networking is the key. Damn NJ I have the Rites book, you and I have way too much in common.:wink2:

In todays world, there are 1000 resumes rcvd electronically for what was 10 resumes by mail 2 decades ago... not unusual for a published opening to rcv 3000-10,000 resumes...

so how does a recruiter deal with this... keyword search...
recruiter isn't interested in your best interests and whether you would be a perfect fit if you could talk to someone... he is paid to provide candidates that have a checkmark in all 10 items on his criteria list... and he doesn't know the industry or the job from scrap anyway...

so he gathers the 10 keywords directly from the clients requirement document and does a keyword search of the 3000 resumes... if you managed to use the EXACT term the client did... you pop up... but if not, you miss...

requirement says: "inventory control" .. your resume says "supply chain"
requirement says: "CRM" .. your resume spells out "Customer Relationship Management"
requirement says:"financial" .. your resume has "external reporting and working capital expertise"
keyword search.. your resume is 0-3

until something happens... like a networking contact says to the hiring agent... "look into this guy" or hands them your resume... the hiring agent is a drone who didn't get his job because he was the valedictorian of his class... a recruiter looks bad if he doesn't provide resumes with 10 out of 10 keyword hits... and recuiter isn't going to spend the time to read the resume... get a feel for you... then discuss you with the client as to why, despite you getting a 6-for-10 keyword hit.. that you're the man...
