Production of 'Chappelle's Show' suspended

NEW YORK (AP) — Production of the popular Comedy Central series Chappelle's Show has been suspended and its third season's premiere indefinitely delayed.

Comedy Central issued a statement Wednesday, saying: "All parties are optimistic that production will resume in the near future."

The season will not start May 31 as originally scheduled, the statement added.

Neither Comedy Central publicist Tony Fox nor Dave Chappelle's spokesman, Matt Labov, would discuss what caused the halt in production or how long it might last.

This unexpected turn deprives the network of one of its most valuable properties, a sketch-comedy series with a raw, satirical edge that became a critical and popular hit.

Last summer Comedy Central signed Chappelle to a deal reportedly worth $50 million for a third and fourth season. The two-year agreement also allowed Chappelle to develop other programming for the cable channel and cut him in on DVD sales, a lucrative factor considering his series' first-season DVD sold more than 2 million copies.

Last season the show was nominated for three Emmys, including outstanding comedy series.

I heard on the radio today that Charlie Murphy was quoted as saying Chappelle's Show is dead. He also said that the bits that they had filmed for the third season (earlier reported as being enough for 4 shows) would be released on DVD later this year. He said season 3 was looking to be funnier than the other 2.
From listening to some of the commentary on the season 2 DVD's it sounded like DC was under a lot of stress just to finish up that season. I think he is too much of a perfectionist to put out a show that he felt was less than his best. If anyone owns season 2 listen to the commentary on the Wayne Brady episode.

Why would they cancel the show altogether? Just take a year off, then get everything together next year once Chappelle is healthy again.

Also, the Rick James/Charlie Murphy extended interviews on the bonus disc are a must .. hilarious.

"Does Wayne Brady have to smack a bitch?"

I also heard today on the radio that Neal Brennan, Chapelle's best friend and co-writer of all of the Chapelle's Show stuff, has actually reached a buyout settlement with Comedy Central. So if Brennan is no longer onboard, it certainly adds to the sentiment that the show is done.

another rumor is that Comedy Central wants to much control over the show. It really doesn't matter if he's healthy or not... they can't agree on the direction to take the show.

well, if its that bad, once out of contract, couldn't chappelle just move to another station who will give him what he wants in control? i did kinda see somethin comin, cus i would think it would be pretty hard to keep stuff comin to be as funny as everything he put out was. but like Sloopy said, a year off would probably help alot, and even more time to work on skits for the next few seasons. hell, at worst case, they could go to HBO and still get money from DVD sales.
