Pre-Season Selections for Surprise Player of 2005

To win anything we need a Pass rush and a running game: So Hopefully Vern Gholston will be the pass rusher, and being a long time East-sider(Walnut Ridge "72) Eric Haw will strengthen the running game..and Alex Boone as top freshman
When it comes to a man with raw potential Gholston is the guy. His Nike camp numbers were not to be believed. I can't recall what they were, but no DE prospect was bigger/faster/ stronger than Gholston.

I am definently on the Haw bandwagon but one of the coaches said earlier this year that (and I am just paraphrasing here) he doesn't have all of the fundamentals right now. There was someting to the effect of his head not being there. Now whether that is a confidence thing or he isn't mentally ready for college ball yet is beyond me

Ask and you shall receive, stowfan....

Nike Camp:
Height: 6-3
Weight: 238
40-Yard Dash: 4.45
Vertical Jump: 31.6"
Bench Reps: 31

:yow1:

As for me, I'd love to see some of the young D-linemen show up big-time. Barrow, Gholston, Sian, Worthington, Abdallah, etc. Let's see this group bring us back to the 2002 level...

One of the BN Insiders alluded to Haw being fragile so far. Supposedly, he has not adjusted well to the intensity of a college practice and was constantly getting dinged up.

I hope neither is the case because I was really looking forward to big things from Mr. Haw.
A good off-season of conditioning should help that physically and, most importantly, mentally. Pitt had a jump on him from the early enrollment and extra conditioning...Haw went from being "the man" to being another player. Sometimes that can be a hard adjustment. He'll be fine IMO.

Erik Haw = Solid

All,

I have worked with Haw and he is a hard worker.

As for an off-season program, I hope he finds a good place to get ready, because he is the definintion of Big Speed! So much potential, as is the case with so many of our players, he is the type of guy you want to see succeed!

Peace.

I agree with a lot of who has been mentioned so far, so I've gotta put a name in there that hasn't been named - David Patterson. The guy should have a breakout year and with Pitcock probably drawing more of the attention from the opposition, he could have a huge year.

Quinn Pitcock. He will be on many All American lists at the end of next season. He is prime for a huge season, he started to come into his own late in the season. He has crazy athletism, strength, and finally has learned the technique for an interior lineman. I think that his emergence was the key to the improvement of our defense late in 2004. Also keep your eye on Sian Cotton next season on the defensive line.

The other defensive player that will become a household name is Marcus Freeman. The buzz on him is unreal, and many are saying that he is prime to be something special. I look for him to split time in the middle with MDA and Schlegal. He'll also be a good reserve OLB.

On offense I like the call of Nichol. I think that with great receivers on both sides, you will see Nichol get a matchup on a LB most of the time. This is a battle that he should win everytime. If we can get our TE's going along with our WR's, the running game will most certainly progress.
everything he said.

im also leaning in the zwick direction. i think the spread look actually plays more to his strengths than smiths. expecially when you factor in the talent the qb is going to be surrounded by.

on d, pitcock is going to be a beast. if we were betting, my vcash would be on nicol and pitcock.

Biggest surprise in 2005?
Whoooo, this is a tough question. I'd narrow it down to Marcel Frost or Sirjo Welch. Did you see Sirjo on special teams last season? Wow! He was always the first one down there and 9 times out of ten he'd be the guy to make the tackle. He's the 2nd coming of M. Doss. He's a Hitter. Although, I have read that he still needs vast improvement on covering WR. I still believe he'll be playing.

Warrior = Welch :biggrin:
