Pope disapproves of Harry Potter

I'd hate to see what they say about Dan Brown books.

I'm Catholic and the only thing I do not care for with his books is how some people think it is non-fiction. Of course, he kind of perpetuates that belief by making statements that he has found some very important information that he will have in a future book.

The first thing I told my mom after I read the Da Vinci Code was that it would really shake your view of religion if you didn't realize that it is fiction. I've read 3 of Brown's books now and every one of them will piss off someone. With all the troubles that NASA is currently having I am getting flashbacks of Deception Point.

blah, blah, blah. Religious fanatics will always have something completely irrelevant to bitch about.

As far as Dan Brown goes, The Da Vinci Code is fiction, but it is based upon a centuries old "conspiracy theory". He incorporates this theory into the entire story line, and incorporates enough "truth" (according to the legend) so that many believe his entire book is factually based (at least from a historical perspective).

People thinking Harry Potter is in any way demonic, or even anti-christian, is ridiculous. Somebody explain to me the difference between Harry Potter and Luke Skywalker, save only the difference between the words "force" and "magic".

No its not anti-christian at all... it's just something where when not combined with good parenting it could be a problem. I would have no problem with my kids reading it.

Good point about the birth control & condoms thing. Just b/c the church doesn't like it doesn't mean it's actually not christian. Heck, just look at MLuther's viewpoints vs. Catholicism.

Sorry have to vent: Catholic weddings are the worst and it seems like everyone I know is a freaking Catholic.

My wife, who is now Catholic (she was Methodist) used to complain about Catholic masses. When we were first married we went to the local Methodist church. His services put masses to shame. They were all a good 1.5 hours.

Hawg - There are a billion of us and we are everywhere. Don't worry though, we don't bite :biggrin:

Skywalker = movie = entertainment

Potter = book = dangerous

People have burned and banned books for decades. Why? Probably because anybody can read them and can read them in secret. Nobody cares about movies.

No freaking kidding... you know its bad when you're a groomsman, and at teh reahearsal, the Preist says "At this point, the bridal Party will be seated."

This is bad for two reasons... first.. you know its going to be long as hell... and second... then you have to remember when the heck you're supposed to get back up... without falling asleep... and of course, this is always in the summer, and there is NEVER air conditioning... and if you're me... you showed up half in the bag already... pure hell.

A short Hindu wedding is 3 hours. The only good thing is that it's very informal and people are coming/leaving as they please and talking amongst themselves. When I went to my friend's in September, a bunch of us left at 3:30 to catch the NCState/OSU game. Nobody cared.

Most Indian weddings come with a lunch (after wedding) and dinner (during reception). The one I went to September had a brunch and buffet dinner.

We were in Ohio for a wedding a couple of years ago. We were heading back to the hotel for the night and walked by one of the banquet rooms. They were just starting that reception and the sign said it was planned to go until like 2 or 3 in the morning. We spoke to some people the next morning and I guess it was still going at 5 AM.

We went to a wedding of some friends a few years back and it was well into the 90s and no air in the church. That was no big deal. What concerned us was that the bride was Filipino and they did this thing where they put what was basically one big rope around the heads of the bride and groom. We were hoping neither one would collapse from the heat as it would have instantly become a giant noose. They both survived.
