Pop-ups?

I was just wondering about how pop ups become such a big problem on some pages. Do the web site owners allow the pop-ups or are they just something that attach themselves to the URL? Not really sure how that works but I have noticed some of the other sites (BN) seem to have 2 or 3 of them pop up with every click. Nothing worse than that. Do the poeple that create the pop ups pay web sites to allow them to attach to their sites?

One more question, when I am at home I have a pop up blocker. While I am at work though, I am running off of a server. Can I put the same type of blocker on my work computer or does the block have to go on the server?
 
The only question I can answer would be you may be able to install a pop-up blocker (I use and recommend the google toolbar) on your work computer, but sometimes the admins of the network don't allow downloading. Other than that there *should* be no problems.

As far as I know, all pop ups are allowed by the web site owners or the site hosting the page. I think it's also possible for other pop-ups to come up on your system if you are infected with a spyware application. If you are really getting a lot of pop-ups you should probably scan your system using AdAware, Spybot Search and Destroy, or SpywareBlaster.

The Google toolbar works fairly well in blocking pop-ups and provides a handy tool to search the web. You can download it here.

The most effective way I've found of blocking pop-ups and other ads is by using a host file. This is a little more technical but doesn't require any extra software. Here's a place to download one and explains how it works.

My pop-up blocker and accelerator came with my ISP. Firewall, too, but had too much trouble with that so went
elsewhere for that. I've had one pop-up since June (Marriott Hotel-don't know how they got in).
