I got an 8 foot Olhaussen (sp?) withs scarlet felt and grey rails.

Personally I would rather have an 8 foot table with a few areas where you need a short cue. I have one or two spots where my cue will barely touch the wall which is managable for me. If you have 7-10 spots where you will need a short cue, then downsize to the 7 footer.

People don't realize how much space you need to have no impeded shots on a pool table.

You need TONS of space.

Indeed. I don't know the exact specifications of my pool room (aka "the place to be") but if the ball is against the rail in one location and you try to pool the cue back more then 3 inches, you tap the wall. I have played so much now that I don't notice it, of course when my friends come over, I take full advantage by leaving them tons of shots from that spot.

when I had the pool table put in, I figured there was no way that the cue would hit the wall, but it does in that one spot.

I guess a good rule of thumb is: when in doubt, get the 7 footer.

I'll measure my room tonight and post the specifications. If Grad's room is any smaller than mine, he should get a 7 footer.

Grad....I hope this helps:

My pool table area is 17 feet 4 inches by 13 feet 4 inches.

My table is 8 feet long by 4.5 feet wide. I only have one small area where the wall affects a shot.

Awesome. So is the playing surface 7' long or is the length of the entire tabel 8' ?

It was 8 feet long from one end of the table to the other (not the playing surface). The way my table is laid out there isn't that much trim around the palying surface so I would say that the slate is pretty close to 8 feet long.

Of course my 4 year old was holding the end of the measuring tape :o). When I bought it, it was categorized as an 8 footer. I hope this helps.
