Guess who Craig James' agent turned out to be?????? The main character (read:money man) in this whole saga...

Go back and read the link I posted from the SI Vault. Craig James worked at Blount's real estate office every summer up until at least 1986, which was current at the time of that article. Who knows how long it continued after that?

I looked up SMU, just to get a little back ground on what kind of school it is.
The current tuition, room and board is $49.000 + per year. Not hard to believe they have a wealthy booster or two.
That has changed since 87. The enrollment was a bit larger back in the day and the admission standards were lax, obviously. The Methodist Church came down hard on SMU in the wake of the scandal.

Craig James? career at SMU spanned 1980 to 1983. When James moved on to pro football, one guess who is agent was?
The same Sherwood Blount who set up the slush fund that pounded the final nail into the SMU football program.
In his book Game Day, A Rollicking Journey to the Heart of College Football, James gave this carefully parsed account of his days SMU:

Now, I?m not going to sit here and tell you I never received a nickel during my playing days. But I can say with certainty that no benefits were ever extended to me from anyone associated with the SMU administration.
Not coincidentally, there?s not a single mention of Sherwood Blount in the book.
Is it unreasonable to think that with James? agent found to be behind the slush fund that led to the death of the SMU program, James took money from that agent during his playing days at SMU? Especially considering Blount was already barred from the program by the NCAA when he set up the ?85 slush fund?
What would happen today if James was currently playing for SMU and it was found he was taking money from an agent?
Whether that agent was associated or not with the SMU administration, James? college football career would be over and the SMU program would have some explaining to do to the NCAA.
Knowing what we know now, is it unreasonable to think that James actively participated in the same dirty system at SMU that eventually led to the football program?s demise?

I bet 48 hours in the equipment shed will get it out of him.

Are there any older generation BP'ers that remember this team? Were they as good as advertised?

I've seen old highlights of great games of the 1980's - but I can't remember any amazing SMU victories.

I think its nuts a team can be that dominant but not even play in their own stadium. I've read during the early to mid 80's - they were a more popular draw than the Dallas Cowboys.

As someone who watched them twice in person, no. They were great at winning the games they should, and by the early 80s, the SWC was a shell of it's former self; Texas was drifting, and Lou Holtz was losing 3 of 4 to a bad Baylor team to guarantee his firing at Arkansas. TAMU was just starting to ramp up their cheating machine, and SMU gave them the lessons in what to mostly avoid.

Their 'undefeated season' required one of the most atrocious pass interference calls in history to happen-- indeed, the play eventually became a textbook example for referee education.

Were they good? Absolutely. Very talented, without a doubt-- but they also were lazy at times, and let teams that had no business hanging with them stay in games.

I imagine Kentucky was one of them. Around the time SMU was doing their thing, UK's basketball program was failing to properly seal envelopes of cash headed toward recruits while the team was already on probation.

It is worth remembering that Kentucky basketball received the first 'death penalty' before the repeat offender provision; they were forced to close shop on their basketball program for the 1952-1953 season.

The other blast from the past, archive from the Houston Chronicle in the aftermath of Houston hanging 95 points on SMU freshmen in 1989.

Everyone here is familiar with Andre "Shame on you Coach Tressel for running-it-up on poor wittle Northwestern" Ware, I'm sure.

The next week, Houston went to Little Rock, and got mauled. Two 4th quarter TDs when the matter was already decided made it much closer, but the crowd chanted 'SMU SMU SMU' at the Houston bench for most of the 4th Quarter.
