Police SUV runs over, kills sunbather on beach

Tuesday, June 13, 2006; Posted: 4:23 a.m. EDT (08:23 GMT)

OXNARD, California (AP) -- Two police officers patrolling a beach in an SUV on Monday ran over and killed a sunbather, authorities said.

The officers did not immediately realize they ran over the woman and continued driving, police Cmdr. Tom Chronister said in a statement.

The officers, who were not immediately identified, had stopped on a small berm of sand to watch a swimmer who they believed to be in distress. When they saw the swimmer was fine, they drove over the berm and apparently over the woman's head, authorities said.

A witness called the Oxnard Fire Department to report the woman was bleeding on the beach just south of the Embassy Suites Mandalay Beach Resort. The woman, Cindy Conolly, 49, of Sioux City, Iowa, was in town for her son's wedding, said Mike Feiler, senior deputy medical examiner in the Ventura County coroner's office.

An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday. The officers have been placed on paid leave pending an investigation.

Oxnard is located about 55 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles

id say id hit it, but apparently thats been done...

crappy situation, but it happens. i used to work for a frieght company called emery world wide. i was there the night a 20k forklift hit a pilot who wandered past the "safety area" and onto the ramp. the lift operator didn't see him and splat. he lost one leg and half the other one. the lift operator thought he had hit a skid. stoped and got out to get it off the ramp and found the pilot literally stuck to the wheel. the operator went into shock on sight.

This happens in Florida a lot. There has been much talk(and already some action) about stopping any vehicles from entering the beach. Its not a good setup.

Feel bad for the lady and her family.:(
They've already reduced the times that you can drive on Daytona's beaches. Its a sad to see the end of what I thought made Daytona Beach unique.

They stopped night driving in Daytona not long after I left there. Locals were fit to be tied.

How the hell could the lady not hear the engine? I feel bad for her family but, I just can't understand even sleeping how she couldn't hear it.

depends on the beach. some beaches allow cars on the sand. could have been alot of 4 wheelers around. falling asleep with engine noises all around might explain it. could also be caused by her lifestyle as well. when i worked in the shipping industry every morning i fell asleep literally feet from a running turbofan off a 727 or larger. a car engine wouldn't wake me up.

She got ran over by an SUV, not an M1A1 Tank. Most of those SUVs have mufflers and what-not that keeps the engine pretty quiet at low speeds. A lot of people sun-bathe while listening to music on MP3 and CD players and stuff too.
