Interesting case. He gets 45 days in the slammer for repeated traffic violations, but won't miss any games.

Georgia DT gets jail sentence but no suspension

ATHENS, Ga. -- Georgia defensive tackle Darrius Swain was sentenced to 45 days in jail for repeated driver's license violations, and began serving the term immediately.
Swain also was ordered Tuesday by Clarke County Judge Kay Giese to spend 40 hours in community service.

Swain was arrested Saturday night and charged with driving with a suspended license and following too closely. It was his third arrest for driving with a suspended license in the last two years.

Georgia coach Mark Richt said Swain would be disciplined internally but would not be suspended for any games.

"With the time in confinement, Darrius is paying a heavy price for his license violations," Richt said. "Hopefully he has learned an important lesson."

ISU's Berryman's return undecided

AMES, Iowa (AP) -- No decision has been reached on Jason Berryman's possible return to Iowa State's football team, athletic director Bruce Van De Velde said.

Berryman, a defensive end who was ISU's most valuable player in 2003, spent more than eight months in the Story County jail for mugging an Iowa State student, taking $4 from him and stealing another student's cell phone. He was released April 18.

Van De Velde has met with Berryman, but he said Thursday that he is not comfortable talking about Berryman's status as an athlete until he re-enrolls as a student.
"After that is done, if that happens, then we will tackle the [football] issue. Until then ... there's nothing to comment on," Van De Velde said.

Berryman is not enrolled for the summer school session that begins Monday, according to ISU's registrar's office.

Van De Velde said he did not want to discuss Berryman's plans until that first step is taken.

"Not to say that he will or won't [re-enroll], I think it's too early to comment," he said.

Van De Velde did not say whether Berryman appeared eager to come back to ISU during their meeting.

"We didn't get into that," he said. "It was all very general."

Berryman pleaded guilty last fall to first-degree theft, a felony, and assault causing injury, a misdemeanor. He was sentenced to 300 days jail then released early for good behavior.

Part of his sentence includes two years of probation.

Berryman has met at least once with coach Dan McCarney since he was released from jail. The coach indicated after the meeting last month that he was a long way from making a decision on whether Berryman could play for the Cyclones again.

Van De Velde said he and McCarney have not discussed the situation much.

Iowa State begins pre-season practice in early August.

Tennessee's McDaniel indicted, faces felony assault charge

CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee defensive tackle Tony McDaniel was indicted on a felony charge of aggravated assault for allegedly hitting a student in the face during a pickup basketball game on campus in January.
A Knox County grand jury handed down the indictment Tuesday, according to court documents obtained by the Associated Press on Wednesday.

McDaniel, who will be a junior this fall, was suspended from the team after the assault. He made his first career start for Tennessee in the Volunteers' 38-7 win over Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl.

McDaniel is one of 11 Tennessee players who have been either arrested or cited for crimes ranging from aggravated assault to underage drinking since February 2004.

The 6-foot-7, 295-pound McDaniel is accused of hitting Edward Goodrich, a 26-year-old student. Goodrich testified during a hearing in April that his face was broken in four places and doctors had to insert a metal plate to treat his injuries.

I think a certain Ivy league school may want to talk to whomever it was at SI.Com that drafted this headline. The players are from Indiana Univ. of Pa., not Penn. I've got to classify this as incompetent journalism.

Three Penn players charged in brawl

INDIANA, Pa. (AP) -- Three Indiana University of Pennsylvania football players and one former player were charged with aggravated assault and other crimes for a fight that police say became a riot at a bar in the college town.

Linebacker Kirby Griffin, of Rochester, last season's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-West Rookie of the Year, was charged in the May 5th incident at Wolfendale's. Also charged were wide receivers Joe Slappy the Third of Midland, Javon Hines of Bridgeville, and Peter Smith of Pittston.
Hines will be a junior next season, while Slappy and Griffin will be sophomores.

But university officials say Smith, who would have been a sophomore next season, is no longer on the team or enrolled at the school, but declined to say why.

Police say the players became upset when an employee wouldn't admit a friend to the bar, and began punching the man. Griffin is also accused of punching a female employee.

Efforts to contact the players and coach Frank Cignetti through the sports information department weren't immediately successful.

And the ugly topic of steroids makes an appearance in college football. Welcome to LSU, Les Miles.

LSU's Jordan suspended from team

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- LSU reserve fullback Shawn Jordan, facing charges involving steroids, has been suspended from the football team, head coach Les Miles said Thursday.

Jordan was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance Tuesday in his hometown of El Paso, Texas, after allegedly attempting to transport anabolic steroids across the U.S. boarder from Juarez, Mexico.
"This is a very serious matter to us," Miles said. "We do everything we can as an institution to educate and inform our team about the dangers of drugs, in particular steroids. We have a comprehensive drug testing program in place and the NCAA comes in to test our athletes two or three times a year."

Miles said he did not believe Jordan intended to deal to or share steroids with fellow LSU players.

"I'm confident that it's isolated," Miles said. "We are going to do everything we can to help Shawn through this situation. However, he will be suspended from the team until we can gather all of the facts and get more information as to exactly what his involvement is."

In two years with the Tigers, Jordan has appeared in two games, both of them lopsided victories last season over Arkansas State and Mississippi State.

Former PSU players plead guilty in arrow incident

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- Two former Penn State football players accused of shooting arrows through a dormitory room wall pleaded guilty Wednesday to misdemeanor charges of criminal mischief.

Former center E.Z. Smith and former linebacker Mike Sothern were each fined $100 for their involvement in the Jan. 29 incident.
Prosecutors said they shot graphite arrows at a T-shirt hanging on a wall, and residents of the neighboring apartment said they heard noises and found an arrow.

Investigators said they found about 34 arrow holes in the wall. University officials said the cost of the repairs was still being estimated, but police estimated the damage at about $700, according to court records.

Penn State expelled Smith and Sothern for two semesters.

ESPiN is out of control. Trev and Markie must be fired NOW!!!

ESPN correspondent Bruce Martin, in Indianapolis to cover the upcoming Indy 500, faces charges of drunk driving and resisting arrest after a police chase early Tuesday morning.

Martin reportedly took one of the Speedway's promotional 2005 Chevy SSR Pace Cars for a drunken joy ride that involved several hit and run accidents. Cops gave chase. When he was finally stopped on West 56th Street, Martin refused to get out of the car.

An officer broke the car's window and tasered him.

He then failed a field sobriety test registering .22, nearly three times the legal limit for alcohol.

Martin was released from jail, without posting bond, around noon. If convicted, he faces up to six years in jail and $25,000 in fines.

The car, according to police, was destroyed in the chase and has been returned to the manufacturer.

Two S.C. players accepted into PTI

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Two more South Carolina players involved in the thefts at Williams-Brice Stadium last November were accepted into a pre-trial intervention program.

An official in the Fifth Circuit Solicitor's office, Babs Lindsay, said ex-quarterback Dondrial Pinkins and offensive lineman Freddy Saint-Preux will take part in the program, which allows first-time offenders to clear their records once they finish their community service.

<!--startclickprintexclude-->Former linebacker Rod Wilson had already been accepted in the program.

Those three, along with ex-tight end Brian Brownlee, receiver Syvelle Newton and lineman Woodly Telfort were arrested and charged this past fall after $18,000 worth of computer and video equipment and several framed photographs were taken from the stadium.

Pinkins, Newton, Saint-Preux and Wilson were charged with misdemeanor counts of petit larceny.

Brownlee and Telfort were charged with grand larceny for taking laptops and projectors.

Brownlee has applied for the diversion program. Telfort is not eligible because he took part in the program after a 2001 arrest in Miami for grand theft auto. Telfort has also been dismissed from the Gamecocks.
Mo-ped ride turns up arrest warrant

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- University of Minnesota football player Everett Pedescleaux was arrested and later released last week after campus police found an outstanding arrest warrant while stopping the player on his mo-ped.

The freshman defensive end was driving his mo-ped near campus on Thursday when University of Minnesota police pulled him over for not wearing eye protection, Deputy Police Chief Steve Johnson said.
When Pedescleaux was pulled over, police found that he had an outstanding arrest warrant for failing to appear in court.

Pedescleaux, who was released later Thursday, was arrested last July for allegedly shoplifting a CD from a Best Buy store.

Pedescleaux pleaded not guilty at an initial court appearance last August. But court records say he did not appear for a pretrial hearing later that month, so a warrant was issued for his arrest.

He is scheduled to appear in court on May 31.

Pedescleaux declined comment through a university spokesman.

WSU player pleads guilty in sex case
COLFAX, Wash. (AP) -- Washington State reserve running back Kevin McCall was sentenced to 45 days in jail after pleading guilty to fourth-degree assault with sexual motivation.

McCall, a 19-year-old sophomore backup running back for the Cougars, was arrested in March on a charge of third-degree rape stemming from an alleged sexual assault in a campus dormitory.
McCall last week agreed to plead to the lesser charge of fourth-degree assault with sexual motivation.

At a sentencing hearing Monday morning, Whitman County Superior Court Judge David Frazier ordered McCall to serve 44 days with credit for a day already spent in the Whitman County Jail. That sentence could be reduced to one month with good behavior.

McCall also will spend two years on probation and has agreed to a permanent restraining order and to pay compensation for the victim's counseling.

Chief Deputy Prosecutor Carol LaVerne and the woman's aunt had asked for a nine-month jail term.

WSU head coach Bill Doba was not in his office on Tuesday. He has not said what further team disciplinary action McCall might face. McCall was suspended from all team activities after his arrest and was not allowed to participate in spring practices.

The Carson, Calif., native was expected to back up starting running back Jerome Harrison. McCall rushed eight times for 40 yards last season.
