Poinsettia Bowl: Navy v. Utah (-8.5)

Not that I enjoy agreeing with Mark May or Lou Holtz, but Navy's defense was impressive for most of the game. Utah had to start dinking them short and beating Navy with athleticism to get any momentum going. Brian Johnson is going to be a very good player when he recovers from his injury. Good luck to Navy seniors in their roles as officers.

Officials acknowledge error that led to clinching TD for Utah

The officiating crew from the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl has acknowledged an error in a fourth-quarter call that affected Navy's chances to beat Utah.

...

On third and goal from the 4-yard line, Utah wide receiver Jereme Brooks caught a pass from Brian Johnson. As he extended the ball toward the goal line, he was hit by Navy cornerback Ketric Buffin. The ball fell forward and hit the pylon.

Initially, the referee ruled that the ball belonged to Utah at the 1-yard line. Navy called for a review, but the review official confirmed the call on the field.

After the game, the crew admitted it was the wrong call.
Doh.

I don't blame the refs on the field for missing the call in live action, but that replay ref had to be brain dead, and not overturning that call should cost him his job for next year.

the on the field refs get a free pass as far as I'm concerned, but why do the replay refs keep screwing it up? not just this game, but at least 5 or 6 times this year. there's no excuse. you get to see it from all angles in slow mo as many times as you want. the worst part is that no one seems to be held responsible after the fact. the big one to me that comes to mind is the uconn temple game. (if i wanted to be a homer i'd say mendenhal's fumble in our game but i digress)
