I've heard of pre-med and pre-law (basically means you're a biology major or a political science major, or something, but want everyone to know you're going to be hot shit soon enough). I've never heard of pre-mechanical engineering. Is this a new thing in engineering departments?

No, it has been around for some time now:

College of Engineering Pre-Major Program

Students interested in pursuing engineering at Ohio State indicate their engineering major of interest on their application. Applicants are reviewed holistically by Ohio State Undergraduate Admissions. All students entering Ohio State in the College of Engineering enroll in the Pre-Major Program, enabling students to explore our 14 majors through both their coursework and information sessions

This fall hasn't been a normal one for anybody in this country.

The coronavirus pandemic didn't stop 51 current and former Ohio State athletes from graduating from the university following the Autumn 2020 semester.

Former linebacker Ryan Shazier, point guard CJ Walker, center Josh Myers, former cornerback Jeff Okudah, defensive tackle Haskell Garrett, former offensive lineman Alex Boone, wing Musa Jallow and linebacker Tuf Borland were among those to earn degrees from their university during Sunday's virtual commencement ceremony.

In total, seven former Buckeye athletes returned to school to take classes and finish their classwork through the degree completion program set up by the athletic department in 1994: Shazier, Boone, Okudah, Connor Curlis (baseball), Sam Jardine (men’s hockey), Isaiah Prince (football) and C.J. Saunders (football). Saunders, who earned a Master's Degree in kinesiology, is currently working on the football staff in an unannounced capacity after having his sixth-year waiver denied by the NCAA earlier this year.

Ten football players graduated this fall, including Borland, Garrett, Myers, linebacker Justin Hilliard, tight end Luke Farrell, kicker Blake Haubeil and quarterback Gunnar Hoak. Borland and Hoak were awarded Master's Degrees in sports coaching.

Buckeyes extend winning streak in classroom, add academic honors

Ohio State was once known for only caring about one thing — winning games.

Over the decades the Buckeyes have shed the reputation. Assumptions around the country were that in Columbus, student-athletes were kept to less-than-rigorous standards.

No more. Ever since Urban Meyer took over at Ohio State for the 2012 season, the program’s reputation has grown much stronger, thanks in part to Real Life Wednesdays. The standard of excellence on and off the field set by Meyer has been kept going by Ryan Day.

On Thursday afternoon, the Buckeyes coach shared on Twitter the program’s latest success in the classroom. Ohio State currently boasts an average team GPA of a 3.05, stretching the streak to four-consecutive semesters with a GPA above 3.0. Sixty student-athletes had a GPA above 3.0 this past semester, while Ohio State has 40 Academic All-Big Ten recipients.
