While the Pirates have been pursuing the Cardinals the Cubs loaded up and raced by them. They bring in Lester, Hammel, and Arrieta while the Bucs give away Neil Walker for the Mets 7th starter (and make him their 3rd), sign Nicasio off the scrap heap and noodle-arm Jeff Locke still has a spot. No contest, much like every game between the two teams so far this season. :getout:

Eh, some forget how forgettable Walker was, evidently. And he's even more so this year. He's a lifetime sub-.275 hitter and he's worse so far this year, which makes his presence in the lineup difficult to really miss for anyone who really understands baseball.

Finally beat the damn Cubs. :pirate:

Bucs need to get it going at home against Atlanta and Colorado this week. Heading down for tonight's series opener at PNC.

I could do with a few more 10 game home stands against the Braves, Rockies, and Diamondbacks. 8-2 always helps the cause. :pirate:

Jeff Locke pitched the first complete game shut out of his career and the Bucs' first this season, a three hitter as the Pirates beat Miami 10-0 last night.

Yes, that Jeff Locke. :yow2:

Locke, while not outstanding, has pitched reasonably well for a 5th starter this season (IMO.) Nicasio is the guy who isn't getting it done. His ERA for May was 6.75. We need him to get it together or for Glasnow or Taillon to step in and solidify that spot in the rotation.

Nicasio was originally signed to be in the pen and I think that's where he'll ultimately prove his worth this season. Locke has been decent but I'd still like to see both of the kids step in and upgrade the team. That may be too much to expect this season, though.

True, if they could both move into the starting rotation and prove effective then a liability (starting pitching) could become a strength of the team. I think the Cubs can be caught if our pitching can improve.

After ending a disappointing road trip with 3 losses in Miami, Liriano is throwing batting practice to the Angels in PNC Park tonight.

Thank fuck the Pens won the Cup because the Bucs' season appears to be swirling in the bowl. The starting pitching has been suspect (as some of us fans feared), the bullpen has struggled to make up for it at times, the MVP center fielder is batting under .250, and now Cervelli is out until probably August. The icing on the cake? The one reliable starter (Cole) left early Friday and is being skipped due to triceps tightness.

The schedule between now and the AS break is brutal. I expect to be sub .500 by July. While I predicted 3rd place in the division I thought mid-80s in wins was attainable. I'm not sure of either now. :argh:

Last season the Bucs had the 3rd best team ERA in the first 6 innings. They're currently 18th - over a full run higher - which is a big reason they're 33-33. Hard to believe 60% of your rotation consisting of Nicasio, Locke, and Niese would produce mediocrity. Who woulda thunk it? :ohbrother:
