Phil Simms backs up son

Head Coach
I am not sure if any of you guys heard this today, but this is about stupid. All Young did was question a kids toughness and ole daddy goes spoutin' off about how young doesnt know what he is talking about. He obviously has to know something or else he wouldnt of won the championships and he wouldnt have gotten hired to be an analyst.

You don't see everyone elses parents whining when some calls their kid out.

Maybe Phil needs to take off the blinders and realize what Young is saying holds some weight.

agitated Phil Simms responded directly to comments made on ESPN's Sunday pre-game show by Steve Young that seemed to question the mental toughness of Simms' son, Chris, who is now the starting quarterback for the Bucs.

When asked about Young's comments, Simms, CBS' lead game analyst, said Young's assessment was "fantasy talk."

Simms questioned Young's TV work ethic by saying, "Well, Steve, follow football more than one day a week and you might know some of those answers."

After hearing Simms' response, Young left a message on Simms' cell phone, but did not plan on apologizing.

"Maybe what I will say is that I will be more careful about how I articulate what I'm thinking about young quarterbacks because it certainly had nothing to do with him personally," Young told The Post.

On ESPN's "NFL CountDown" Sunday, after saying Chris has a future in the league, Young added, "But what I worry about is his mental toughness. His dad was one of the greatest at being tough and handling all the criticisms . . . I worry that he grew up in a much different atmosphere, a laissez-faire kind of atmosphere. And I'm worried that he really doesn't have the mental toughness to deal with the information overload that comes with the NFL."

Simms responded by saying, "There is one thing I know my son doesn't lack, and that is toughness. And he didn't grow up in a laissez-faire atmosphere, far from it. Come to my house and live around with me and we'll see how laissez-faire it is.

"I don't know how Steve Young lives his life, but I don't live mine that way. And I didn't raise my kids that way. You can say whatever you want about my son, the one thing that will get me mad and I'll stand in your face about it, is about toughness."

You know what, Phil Simms probably said the same kind of thing that anyone would've said in that situation - he just happens to have a soapbox to stand on.

The NFL and it's fans completely overzealous, especially when it comes to psychoanalysis of players and the ways they are coached and raised as children.

What Young said was a backhanded slap at the Simms household. Things are going too far when people are going on TV saying somebody will struggle with the NFL because of the way they were raised.

Oh, and the last time I checked, Phil Simms quarterbacked as many Super Bowl Champion teams as Young did.

From what I've heard/read, Young was blaming Chris Simms' lack of toughness on his upbringing which gives Papa Simms all the right in the world to come to his boys defense. I kind of liked Steve Young as a commentator, but this was a real cheap shot on his part. Good on Daddy Phil for coming to his boys defense. Classless move on Youngs part. It's one thing to question a QB's toughness, it's another to blame it on his upbringing. What a joke.

I also like Young. What I don't understand is why the heck he made the comment. Doesn't really add anything. He cannot have any real knowledge about Simms upbringing and what took place in their house. So why even go there? Perhaps Young learned something from this that will make him a better sportscaster.

Todd Marinovich was ruined by his upbringing.

I don't blame a father for sticking up for his son.....

true... but you wonder if Phil has watched any of TB's games this year. The first two games he started he was terrible... he has a history of making bad, throws, bad reads and bad decisions. He's been better over the last few weeks but there was nothing wrong with what Young said.

Simm's time at Texas alone would've made him stronger or destroyed him. The fact that he never quit competing and has a shot to be a starter in the NFL tells me that he has the mental toughness to survive that sort of thing. Not every athlete has to be raised in poverty to prove mental toughness. They just have to overcome the obstacles put in front of them. Being the starter at Texas over a fan favorite was Simm's test. I think he's proven his mental toughness without Young's poorly thought out comments bringing it into question.

Simms folded in big games at Texas. You don't have to be too mentally tough to beat Baylor.

while i think that phil has a right to say what he thinks i would like to know what about what steve young said is wrong. I watched chris play for 4 years at texas and was one of his biggest fans; however, in that time it was clear that the one thing that he needed to work on more than anything was the mental side of the game. Maybe toughness is the wrong word, maybe he should have commented on his decision making. The bottom line is that Chris has all of the tallent in the world but for one reason or another things just don't always click with him. It was never hard to spot him on campus in his designer clothes and drving his escalade with jersey plates(the only ones i ever saw in austin). Sometimes kids have to want to develop and work hard at a skill before they actually do so. I am not saying that Chris was lazy, but it is easy to see how he could have less drive than that of say, VY. So take what Steve said, replace toughness with dicipline, and i think he is dead on. if Chris can find a way to be motivated he will go far.

My problem with Simms was that his senior year at Texas I was able to predict with 100% accuracy the WR he'd throw to, or if he'd throw at all. Now, I don't watch much Texas football being here in Ohio, but if I can flip on a game and within 5 minutes know precisely where he's going with the ball that's a huge problem.

Chris may not do this anymore, but his tell was - when he'd come to the line, if it was a run he'd look straight ahead. If he was passing he would ALWAYS give a look over to the guy he was going to throw to. ALWAYS. He'd get over center, check the D, and look right or left depending on where his primary was.

Focus, focus, focus - that is was the one thing I always felt Chris Simms lacked.
His father Phil had to really work at being the best, he earned his place in Pro Football history with the Giants. Chris to this point with his Pro opportunities has not done the same.
While I do not doubt that Chris has talent I feel Tampa Bay took him as their pick far more so on potential than on demonstrated ability to win, or his will to win.

As for what Steve Young said - like you stated, it was poorly phrased, for the words he used could in a father's ears sound as if he were raising his son with a silver spoon in his mouth, lending him a sense of entitlement. I agree with you that the general thrust of Young's comments remain on-topic, just wish he hadn't made it sound like there was a dysfunctional family at the root of Chris Simms inability to string together a complete game for Tampa Bay.
