One-On-One With Mike Conley
By Maurice Brooks

LAS VEGAS, July 12, 2007 -- Known for his blazingly-quick first step, the Grizzlies? Mike Conley is capable of getting past any defender. NBA.com?s Maurice Brooks was able to box in the No. 4 pick from this year?s draft following Memphis? 100-76 victory against the Cavaliers in Day 7 action of the NBA Summer League presented by adidas.
Brooks: Mike, I?m sure you are getting tired of answering basketball-only questions. What have you been up to when you aren?t blowing teams out by 24 points?
Conley: We?re a close team. I enjoy hanging out with Kyle (Lowry) and Rudy (Gay). We all chill a lot. We walk the Strip and we go out to eat. Some of us aren?t 21 yet, so there isn?t too much we can do in Vegas.
Brooks: You left something out. I remember being 19-years-old. There has got to be a lot of video game playing.
Conley: Normally we all play video games, but we didn?t bring any with us here.
Brooks: I?m not going to ask you to grade yourself or anything like that, but how do you think things have been going for you on the court?
Conley: This has been everything that I hoped for. I feel like I?m doing a good job.
Brooks: You had 13 points, seven assists and four rebounds today. Was this your best game of the three?
Conley: If you just look at the stats it was. As a team, this is the best we?ve played defensively. We all hustled and played well.

Grizzlies coach Marc Iavaroni has already played Conley highlights in his mind over and over and over again.
"I can't express how happy I am we got Mike Conley," Iavaroni said. "I am really excited. ... I feel blessed as a coach that he will fit our system. He fits our philosophy."
Iavaroni contacted Thad Matta, Conley's coach at Ohio State, to get a sense of how Conley would adjust to the NBA.
"He's going to be leading some seasoned veterans who are always looking for added leadership," Iavaroni said, "but especially a winning pedigree, and that's what he has as well."

GOSHEN ? Inside a big house in this sleepy village that stands on the outskirts of Fayetteville, Mike Conley II was back home. He wasn?t the star point guard who led Ohio State to the national championship game this year or the fourth selection in the 2007 NBA Draft.
He wasn?t even the future of the Memphis Grizzlies. On this night, he was just Mike Conley II, the kid who grew up in Fayetteville before moving away when he was 12.

GOSHEN — Seven years ago, Mike Conley II was a 12-year-old child royally upset with his dad.
Mike Conley Sr. had decided to move his family from Fayetteville so he could work in Indianapolis for the U. S. Track and Field Association. His son didn’t want to go.
“I had some trouble with that,” Conley said. “I don’t think I talked to my mom or my dad for a good month after we moved because it was hard for me to leave everybody. I only knew one thing, and that was Fayetteville, Arkansas.”
On Tuesday, “Little Mike” got a chance to return to the hometown and friends he left. Conley II, now an NBA rookie with a multi-million dollar contract, spent a couple hours catching up with old friends and signing autographs at the Waterford Clubhouse on the grounds of the Waterford Estates subdivision.
Conley wanted to share his good fortune with those he grew up with. He had planned to return to Fayetteville and spend a few days visiting with people, but throwing a party seemed a more efficient plan.
“I just wanted to come back to Fayetteville and see all the people I haven’t seen in a long time,” Conley said. “It has been a fun deal.”

Mike Conley is in a new line of work, and it?s one he has been training for his entire life.
Conley, a nine-time NCAA track and field national champion during his career at Arkansas, is a sports agent and has signed some impressive clients, including NBA first overall pick Greg Oden and Conley?s son, fourth overall pick Mike Conley Jr.
Conley was licensed by the NBA after Oden, Conley and Taequan Cook - Ohio State teammates whom Conley coached in summer leagues years before - declared for the NBA Draft as freshmen.

I've been in Columbus this weekend for the first game of the season. I love coming back to Ohio State because if their is one thing I can say about OSU its that they take care of you once you leave. I had a great time kicking it with friends and watching Michigan lose its first game of the season.
