PG Mike Conley (1st Team All BIG, NBA All-Star, Oscar Winner, Minnesota Timberwolves)

DDN

3/29/06

"He relates with players very well. It's almost like he acts like a player. He likes the same things we like, like movies and video games — things that older people really don't get into. He's a big kid. He's really fun and a nice person. He talked about the movie Old School a lot. It's a real funny movie and one of my favorite movies, too. He can recite any line off of that movie. It's things like that that really caught my eye." — Lawrence North guard Mike Conley, about Ohio State basketball coach Thad Matta

I find it amazing that people say that Conley was not good enough to be in that game. Well first off he only got 8 minutes of play which seems a little unfair.

I think it is funny when people cant see a real pg, b/c all they want to see is scoring. He was the truest pg in that game, but he wasnt able to showcase that b/c that is not what an all-star game is about. So the scorers shined why Conley didnt, but once he gets here, they will all get to see why he is ranked so high.

Conley is a natural point guard, he really didn't get a chance to show what he can do due to the limited minutes and just the style of play in the game. Conley has proven himself over the past 3 years and just keep in mind that the only times Oden has lost a game in high school in the past three years....Conley didn't play in those games.

i differ with your guys comments here. a "true pg" should almost go unnoticed. inconsistency is the mark of mediocracy. that being said when a kid plays 8 mins and goes unmentioned is a good thing.

for comparison a dman in hockey, look at say an adam foote-you go to a game and if you had a low or average knowledge of the game you wouldnt notice him. or a shut down corner, you go and his name isnt called, thats a huge game to me.

Is anybody going to mention that Crittendon's HS coach was the East's coach. Maybe he played favorites? A lot of people were saying the same thing of Ginn Sr. and Wells (though not directly connected, both are Buckeyes) after the Army-AA game and how much meaningless PT James Aldridge got. This could be along those same lines.

I think that the difference in both of those siutations is that Ted Ginn Sr was a high school coach from same state as Beanie and the East team's coach was actually Crittendon's own coach from high school. In my opinion, Crittendon's coach has a lot more bias and had more to gain by letting his own star player play more during the all-star game than Ginn letting a player from his state take extra carries to win the game for his team.

I'm a little disappointed Conley didn't get a chance to show everyone his talent on national TV this time around, but he'll get his chance here in October/November. That's just the way the ball bounces in all-star games.

On a side note, those ND homers complaining about Aldridge need to toughen up a little bit. We didn't whine when Mo Wells only got, what, 4 carries in that same game the year before.

Oden, Conley give a preview Ohio State's 4 recruits play together for the 1st time and put together an impressive performance in all-star victory

CHICAGO -- For years, the Roundball Classic has been a preview of what's to come in basketball as a showcase for players such as LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal as they came out of high school.

Sunday afternoon at the United Center, it provided a glimpse into one of the top college basketball recruiting classes in recent years.

The four high school players in the Greg Oden-led Ohio State class played together for the first time, starting for the West in a 118-102 victory over the East.

The 7-foot Oden scored a game-high 21 points on 10-for-12 shooting, with 11 rebounds and two blocked shots. Mike Conley, Oden's teammate at Lawrence North, had a game-high 13 assists -- two shy of the record in the 42-year-old Roundball Classic -- seven points and eight rebounds.

Daequan Cook, a 6-5 shooting guard from Dayton, Ohio, had 18 points, and David Lighty, a 6-5 small forward from Cleveland, added 14 points.
Oden, Conley and Cook have played together in summer basketball, going 94-4 with Spiece Indy Heat the past two years. Lighty joined the group Sunday and slipped in seamlessly.

"It was great, kind of a preview of what's to come," Conley said. "I've never played with David before, but he showed out. He converted a lot of my passes, made it easy for me to get assists.

"He fit in real well. He's very unselfish, just like the rest of us. I think that's why Thad Matta recruited him."

The four Ohio State recruits, all ranked in the top 30 in the nation, were joined in the starting five by Lance Thomas, an uncommitted 6-8 power forward from Scotch Plains, N.J., who said he's deciding between Duke and Rutgers.

"Those guys are great," Thomas said. "With Greg, Daequan, Lighty and Mike Conley, that's a starting five right there. You can put anybody in there, and that's a great starting five."

The four Ohio State recruits combined for 60 points, 24 rebounds, 20 assists and shot 26-for-41 from the field.
On one play, Oden tipped a rebound to Lighty, who threw ahead to Cook for a fast-break dunk. On another, Oden cleared space inside and Conley drove the lane and flipped the ball to Lighty for a dunk.

"It was awesome. He dunked on me twice," Oden said of Lighty, referring to alley-oops when Lighty outjumped him. "Daequan usually does that. The first oop, I jumped up and he caught it over me."

Oden had little trouble in the post against an opposing front line that had 6-10 Alex Stephenson (headed to North Carolina), 6-9, 280-pound Derrick Caracter (Louisville) and 6-11 Brian Carlwell (Illinois). Those three shot a combined 14-for-30.

The game was a homecoming for Mike Conley Sr., who coached the West. The Spiece Indy Heat coach, Conley Sr. won a high school state basketball title with Chicago Luther South in 1980 and still has family here.

"It's a great way to sort of end my career with these guys," said Conley Sr., who has coached his son and Oden in summer basketball since they were in sixth grade. "It was great coaching all these guys. I've always been one to tell them a little bit here and a little bit there, and it's going to be a lot of fun to watch their careers."

As for what to expect from the 'Thad Five' -- the class includes a junior college power forward -- Lighty said, "Hopefully we'll be good enough to win a national championship. That's on our minds. That's what we all want to happen."

Conley joins Oden on Indiana All-Stars

BASKETBALL

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Lawrence North standout Mike Conley will join former teammate and Mr. Basketball Greg Oden on the 2006 Indiana All-Stars.

The Indianapolis Star, which sponsors the award, announced the team in Sunday's edition.

Conley, one of the top-ranked point guards in the nation, finished a distant second to his friend Oden in the voting for Mr. Basketball.

All-Star coach Chris Benedict of Columbia City said there is a special buzz about this year's team because of the pair from Lawrence North, the three-time Class 4-A state champion.

"Those two have done such a tremendous job for Lawrence North," Benedict said. "They're team guys who adapted their game to do well in every situation. I'm sure they will be good leaders for this team."

Andrew Warren of Indianapolis Brebeuf, who averaged 19.4 points per game this past season, agreed.

"This is a great opportunity," Warren said. "This team definitely will go down in history."

The Indiana All-Stars will play the Kentucky All-Stars June 17 in Bowling Green, Ky., and June 24 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Vaughn Duggins of Pendleton Heights is the highest-scoring player on the All-Stars, averaging 26.7 points. Eight players averaged 19 points or more as seniors.

Curtis White of Indianapolis Pike wasn't one of them. "I didn't think I had the stats, but I'm glad they realized I was a team player for the state's No. 2 team," said White, who averaged 13 points.

"But I just wanted to win, and I didn't care about stats. I was about playing team ball, and it will be fun playing the same way with the best in the state."

The unit also includes Jeffersonville's Antonio Ballard, Andrean's Luke Harangody, Bloomington South's Cole Holmstrom, Forest Park's Brandon Hopf, Huntington North's Chris Kramer, Homestead's Grant Leiendecker, Anderson's DeJovaun Sawyer-Davis and Gary West's Jamil Tucker.

Oden, at 7 feet, is the team's tallest member. The only players shorter than 6-foot-3 are the 5-10 Holmstrom and 6-1 Conley.

"We've got good versatility," said Benedict. "Some of the guys are strong in specific areas, and several are capable of multiple things."

"Our first intention will be to get (the ball) to Greg and the other guys in the paint," he added. "But we know Kentucky will try to limit that, so we've got to have guys who can knock down outside shots. We also want to play solid defense, run, handle the ball smoothly and score in transition."

Five players are headed to major college programs -- Oden and Conley to Ohio State, Harangody to Notre Dame, Kramer to Purdue and Tucker to Virginia.
