PG Desi "DJ" Carton (transfer to Marquette)

Best PG we have had since Conley Jr? Or going to be? Love the way this kid plays.

Edit - this is coming from a guy that has Craft as his favorite OSU BBall player of all time.
i'm picking nits, but i still don't think dj is quite a point guard. not yet. i mean, he obviously is, but he isn't. more of a playmaker, which the offense needs and thrives on. looking forward to watching carton develop into a pure point guard who controls the offense and facilitates for others. the guy who understands when to settle things down instead of consistently speeding things up. dictating tempo. conley was a master at that. walker has the upper hand in that regard, largely due to age and experience, though it's not a matter of cj versus dj. really enjoy how they play as a tandem. two point guards with different, complementary roles.

Wholeheartedly agree with this assessment. There are flashes of brilliance and times when your jaw just drops. Then there are some really poor judgment calls and frustrating mistakes. That hopefully will get corrected with time and the upside is really exciting. And I can't really think back to Conley, but it feels like it wasn't exactly the same. He didn't have some of those issues , but I don't think we really had to rely on him early on the season. Point being that there is plenty of time for DJ to manage his game better and still be an explosive player like he has been, but without the mistakes. That is my long-winded, slightly differently worded version of what you said.

Selfishly, I'd love to get two years out of him. So anything that doesn't hurt the team enough to make a difference but keeps him from being a one and done is fine by me.

to me, carton is my morning jacket. i found mmj well before they became popular -- or popular by non-mainstream standards. i selfishly hoped they wouldn't become "found." i lost some fandom when they became known and cool simply because they became known and cool. i certainly won't lose my fandom for carton once he reaches stardom, especially not during his time at osu, but there is that selfish part of me that hopes carton doesn't become too good too early. i'm sure this selfish sentiment is common among many fanbases.

but i would be okay with carton officially becoming a superstar next, say, november. or during the national championship game this april.

edit: by no means at all am i even hinting that i found carton. would obviously be laughable to make such a claim since i hadn't even heard of carton until shortly before the offer. point above was just about my selfish hope that carton doesn't become a draft darling this season.

felt like i should clarify my post because i understand how it could be read.

I agree with you that he his not a pure point guard and in my time watching basketball those are becoming very far few and between especially at the pro level, he is more of a playmaking point which is starting to become more the norm these days, as I said in this thread a while ago he reminds me of Steve Francis who was more of a playmaking guard than a pure point guard...hell put another inch and a half on him and make him right handed and their builds would be pretty much spot on, but regardless I love this kids competitive spirit he and Liddell are bringing a fire with them that I did not expect from them as freshman add in Luther and it has definitely become contagious and will be benefit us come tourny time.

good post.

the steve francis callback is accurate. i also see carton as a bit like d'angelo. russell wasn't a pure point. kind of a pg/cb/sg hybrid. was a superstar in all 3 roles. however, if you watch his college clips (especially those highlighting his passing ability) and note his stats, you absolutely see d'angelo's point-guard prowess. the scott-russell duo was not dissimilar to walker-carton per their roles and talents, albeit carton not so much being a shooting guard.
