PF Kyle Young (Official Thread)

I can't see any reason Butler would want to release Young from his LOI. There's always the money angle from the buyout, I guess. He'd be a big loss for them, but a big help next year for us. His game absolutely translates into giving us quality minutes as a freshman, something we obviously need. If it's just a matter of a lost year, well, I guess we can live with that.

I doubt the coaching buyout has anything to do with it, but most programs understand that in a coaching change some of the recruits will have a change of heart and want to follow the coach. Not releasing them is "sort of" bad form and bad kharma really as do you really want kids that no longer want to be there HELD HOSTAGE to your AD like that? It is just not a good thing to be doing to 17/18 year olds IMO.

As for Young, IMO the forward spots are okay for this season with Tate, KBD, Andre' and Derek. Young could help but isn't a big factor as I imagine most of the PT will go to SR Tate and JR KBD anyway. Since KBD is back training again I'd expect he'll be at or close to 100% by the fall.

Thompson is the re-recruit that could help the most. Kam is our only established guard and while CJJ played okay toward the end, when thrust into the starter role by Lyle's temporary departure, he is far from an established talent at his level. Add that BB may be far from ready to help and it is thin and dicey at G. Thompson would provide some D and playmaking and insurance/depth that is sorely needed outside.

Why wouldn't they release him? If he asks for a release because he no longer wants to be there I don't like the idea of programs trying to hold kids hostage and against their will like that. I also don't think he'd play a big role here as a frosh unless KBD is still significantly unable to play big minutes.

While it could be a "lost year", it may not be. A fresh perspective on things by the new staff may kickstart some of the returnees. While it would have been nice to add a frontcourt merc when TT turned pro, the F and C positions aren't bad as far as talent and potential and depth. C will be young but if Kaleb can get in shape it could be better than people expect. The F spots are manned by two vets and some talent in reserve roles. It is the backcourt that is the weak link. Which is why Thompson could help there a lot.

Programs also don't appreciate getting raided of players and coaches out of the blue. You are correct, though, Butler would eventually cave. Most situations like this involve a little bit of hardball (or side deals?) until the school relents, a la the recent issue with Pitt and Cameron Johnson, and their attempt to block his move. Since the Bucks aren't direct competitors with Butler, we should be all right.

As far as Young is concerned, he's ready to contribute right away. Could he get some minutes as a SG playing on the court at the same time with two other F's? I say yes, based on his skill set. We'll see what route the new coach goes.

Not a fan of offering Thompson just because we need a guard in 17-18. We'll get at least two good guards in 2018.

I could be wrong but I have read nothing directly from the player, who hasn't enrolled at Butler, and we are already calling him a transfer? To be fair, I want to hear it from the player before assuming he is changing his mind. I don't doubt he may change his mind, but let's not put the cart before the horse. I also don't think transfer is the proper term when they don't enroll in the first place.

relax, dude. it's a freakin' college sports message board where we talk about the possible choices of people too young to vote. without tenuous predictions, what in the hell is the point of the board?
