Mike Clouse coached Jared Sullinger in AAU and was an assistant on the high school team of the Celtics' first-round pick.

BOSTON ?

Mike Clouse remembers the day he first met this kid named Jared Sullinger.

It was seven years ago in a gymnasium outside Columbus, Ohio. Clouse, a Framingham North Class of ?72 alumnus, had been around the world playing and coaching basketball and found himself in the Midwest for an extended visit with his wife?s family. While there, he got a call from someone he knew from his days running the Heart of Texas Hoops Academy asking him to lend a hand with this AAU team of eighth-graders.

It was a guard-oriented squad. The best player from the year before had left to play for the more celebrated All-Ohio Red program, and what was left was a mishmash of undersized frontcourt players with one big ? many would have thought too big ? exception.

?Here was this 6-foot-3, 280-pound, fat little kid no one wanted,? Clouse said.

Clouse worked with Sullinger that day, watched him lumber up and down the court and listened to him talk about how other players made fun of his weight. Clouse said he walked away convinced there was one hell of a basketball player hiding in that chubby body.

?I couldn?t believe no one else could see what I could see,? Clouse said. ?The hands, the footwork, that butt down there in the post. I told him that if he worked at it, and we worked together, he could do great things in this game.?

Clouse was asked to stay as the team?s coach. A year later, when Sullinger?s father and high school coach, Satch Sullinger, asked Clouse to join his staff at Northland High School, Clouse again agreed to extend his Ohio stay.

It was around that time Clouse made a prediction he said the younger Sullinger laughed off immediately.

?I told him one day you?re going to be playing for the Boston Celtics,? Clouse said, ?and I?m going to be sitting in the Garden watching you.?

As Clouse made the drive from Ohio to Framingham this week to visit his mother, he couldn?t have been prouder that the wildest of predictions is only a few months from becoming reality.

LASTING BOND

Clouse?s connection with Sullinger may have been borne out of his own humble beginnings in the game. He never played for Framingham North. He was 5-foot-10 entering his senior year and didn?t hit the growth spurt that eventually put him at 6-foot-5 until his diploma was nearly in hand.

Jared Sullinger?s debut strong
Celtics rookie puts muscle into big day
By Mark Murphy
Tuesday, July 10, 2012 -

ORLANDO, Fla. ? Jared Sullinger is a player who invites contact.

The bump from another large body serves as the trigger for any number of moves by the Celtics [team stats] rookie, who can spin to the basket or release a jump hook once he knows the defender already has committed.

He?ll hit the floor with relish. It goes back to Sullinger?s childhood in Columbus, Ohio, where as the youngest of three large, rugged brothers, he generally was the one who hit the asphalt first.

?When you have two brothers like Julian Sullinger and J.J. Sullinger that, when you go through the air on concrete and they throw you to the ground and (you) get scrapes all over your arms, you learn to concentrate on making the shot instead of the scrapes all over your arms,? Sullinger said after making a few of those shots in the Celtics? 73-65 win against Oklahoma City in their summer league opener.

?Every time I cried they would yell at me because I was worried about the scab or something instead of just worrying about the shot. When you have two brothers like that, there?s no choice but to make the shot. It happened at an early age. Probably like 5. They train you well. I owe them a lot.?

Good first impression for Sullinger
First-round pick shows NBA potential in summer league debut with Celtics

Sullinger: My Teammates Can Really Play
The Celtics 2012 1st round draft pick Jared Sullinger talks about his summer league debut.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Jared Sullinger carries himself a bit like a lottery pick despite his draft day slide. Putting on a Boston Celtics jersey for the first time Monday at the Orlando Summer League, he said his hope was to blend into the scenery.

His offensive eruption in the second half blew his cover.

Fernando Medina/NBAE/Getty ImagesJared Sullinger scored 20 points -- including 14 in the second half -- in his debut in a Celtics uniform.

Sullinger scored a game-high 20 points, 14 of which came after the intermission, while adding six rebounds and a block as the Celtics topped the Oklahoma City Thunder 73-65 in the team's summer league opener at the Amway Center.

Like Boston's other two rookies, Sullinger came off the bench and had an up-and-down first half, but finished strong in the second half, shouldering the offensive load while showcasing an all-around game (from banking home a running hook shot in the lane, to drilling a 3-pointer) and making a strong first impression.

"I didn't want to come into the game thinking like, 'It's all about me, it's all about me,'" said Sullinger, who was pegged as a high lottery pick until concerns about his back allowed him to slide to the Celtics at No. 21 in last month's NBA draft. "Playing all my life, where everything goes through you, I didn't want to be like that today because I have some teammates that can really play. So I was just trying to feel it out in the first half and, the second half, we were falling behind, so I decided to step up and try to score the basketball."

Blakely: Sullinger brings skills to the table

Blakely: Sullinger brings skills to the table

A. Sherrod Blakely says Jared Sullinger brings some skills the Celtics have been missing

Jared Sullinger scored eight points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the second summer league game. Those eight points are a far cry from the 20 he scored in the first game, but A. Sherrod Blakely says Sullinger is doing other things that will make him valuable to the Celtics.

"Even though he didn't put up the same kind of numbers in the second game as he did in the first, he grabbed four offensive rebounds which is something that I can't remember we've seen a Celtics player do that whether it's a summer league game or not," Blakely said to CSNNE's Kyle Draper.

Sullinger faces first tall task
July, 11, 2012
By Chris Forsberg | ESPNBoston.com

ORLANDO, Fla. -- While introducing Celtics top draft pick Jared Sullinger last week, president of basketball operations Danny Ainge stressed how Sullinger will have to play the center position at times at the NBA level and that will mean an adjustment period going up against legit 7-footers.

Sullinger got a bit of an appetizer in Tuesday's summer league tilt against the Brooklyn Nets as he was often matched up with 7-footer Jeff Foote. What's more, the Nets still brought double teams on Sullinger, limiting his ability to do much offensively. Boston's 21st pick in last month's draft still chipped in 8 points (on 3-of-12 shooting) with a game-high 12 rebounds and two assists over 30:50.

"It was a little bit different," Sullinger admitted of going up against a 7-footer. "They collapsed on the post; I wasn’t expecting that and it kinda threw me off guard. I thought with a 7-footer, they would try to contain, but they decided to bring the double every now and then, so that kinda threw me off."

Tough day for Sullinger, Celtics in loss
By: Alex Speier

Celtics first-rounder Jared Sullinger was limited to 11 points on 2-of-9 shooting and Summer League standout E'Twaun Moore was likewise quiet, scoring six points while also shooting 2-of-9 from the floor, as the Celtics took their first loss of the Summer League season in falling to the Pistons, 93-79. In defeat,

GOOD MATCHUP FOR SULLINGER
So his stat line won't wow you -- 2-of-9 shooting, 11 points, seven rebounds, and a block over 28:25 -- but Jared Sullinger got a nice test in matching up with Drummond. Even though his shooting percentage hasn't been great this summer (a result of some ill-advised perimeter shots, too), Sullinger has been a constant contributor, particularly with the way he's able to get to the free throw line (7-of-8 shooting there Thursday).

NBA notes: Sullinger silencing skeptics

So far, the Celtics have to be thrilled close to 20 teams took a pass on Jared Sullinger.

That's not to say Sullinger is headed to the NBA All-Star Game -- but based on early returns at the Orlando Summer League, he should be a more-than-viable backup to Kevin Garnett at power forward. And Sullinger should contribute right away.

In his first three games with the Celtics' summer team, Sullinger scored 20 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and scored 16 points, respectively.

Read: This week, no one's talking about Sullinger's back issues or the fact he was "red-flagged" by NBA doctors. He's shown an ability to power his way over taller defenders, draw fouls, hold his position near the paint and work his way toward the basket for easy shots.

Sort of like he did in his two seasons at Ohio State.

Then again, he tallied just 11 points on 2-for-9 shooting Thursday -- but that may have had more to do with him playing his fourth game in four days than the opposing defense.

Besides, Sullinger isn't going to be counted on to be The Man in Boston. He only needs to make the most of his minutes and contribute to a team that is already a winner. There seems to be little doubt he's setting up the C's for the future.

All this from a guy who was drafted 21st overall.

"Coming out of college, I heard a lot of people compare him to (Cavs forward) Samardo Samuels," said one scout. "That's ridiculous. Samuels is just fine, but the only thing they have in common is their wide frames. Sullinger is so much more skilled it's not funny. He understands the game and is a tireless worker. If he stays healthy, a lot of teams will regret not (drafting) him sooner."

The scout went on to predict Sullinger would be an immediate starter for a lot of teams. "In some situations," the scout said, "he'd be a go-to guy."

Of course, no less than Sullinger predicted this. Prior to the draft, he confidently stood up for himself, saying he couldn't wait to prove his critics wrong.

So far, he's made the most of that opportunity.

Jared Sullinger finds comfort level as pro
By Steve Bulpett / Celtics Notebook
Tuesday, July 17, 2012

LAS VEGAS ? Jared Sullinger continues to look more comfortable in his new NBA skin, and it?s translating directly to the bottom line for the Celtics [team stats]? offseason entry.

The club?s top draft pick had 14 points and seven rebounds as the C?s opened their Las Vegas summer league schedule with an 87-69 victory over Atlanta yesterday.

?I know for a fact I?m getting in better shape with all the games we?re playing, so everything?s starting to come easy,? Sullinger said.

Asked to get a little more specific with ?everything,? he said, ?My ability just to feel the game out and score the basketball, it was getting easier today. I?ve still got a lot to learn, so I hope Kevin Garnett is ready.?

As for whether he?s truly looking forward to KG?s tough love, Sullinger said, ?Yeah, but at the same time, no. It?s probably going to be all the things I don?t do well instead of all the things I do well ? which I need.?

Sullinger and the Celts shook off an awful start before getting in gear yesterday.

?I thought in the first half he struggled a little bit with the length of the big guys,? coach Tyronn Lue said. ?In the second half, our offense got a little stagnant and he took a couple of quick shots ? which I?m fine with if it?s your shot. Then he got the big away from the basket a little bit and was able to put it on the ground and make his move and get a couple of fouls and get stuff going. That was big for us. He kind of bailed us out.?

SULLINGER A BEAST ON THE BOARDS
Sullinger might not have come through in the scoring column as noticeably as in past games (7 points), but he cleaned up the glass with authority, totaling a game-high 14 rebounds, with five of those coming on the offensive end. During one memorable sequence late in the third quarter, Sullinger battled what looked like half the Bulls squad, including 6-foot-10 Henry Sims, for an offensive rebound. He ultimately secured it, missed the putback, fought for another rebound, and got his shot blocked, but it was a relentless effort that showcased another aspect of his promising game.

Thomas Robinson gets best of Jared Sullinger at NBA Summer League
Scott Schroeder
Jul 19, 2012

LAS VEGAS ? Thomas Robinson has been one of the more underwhelming first round picks at the NBA Summer League, though that?s partially due to the high expectations bestowed upon the first round pick. The Sacramento Kings played their fifth and final game on Thursday evening, though, giving Robinson one last chance to keep Kings fans from becoming too concerned.

Mission: Accomplished.

Robinson?s box score still wasn?t overly impressive as he made just six of his 14 shot attempts and only hit half of his six free-throw attempts, but watching him for the fifth time over the course of this week, the rookie showed the reason he was made the fifth overall pick in this year?s draft (and, due to a uniform snafu, he did it all without a name or number on his back).

Robinson had a better attitude than he?s previously showed at Summer League as it didn?t seem like he got down on himself after every missed shot he took and, with that, came an increase in rebounds. The power forward pulled down 16 rebounds while matched up with Jared Sullinger who, for the first time since the Orlando Summer League began last week (eight games of Summer League action thus far for the Celtics), looked underwhelming.

Sullinger and Robinson were likely matches many times throughout the pre-draft process and, had it not been for Sullinger being red-flagged, it sounded like they might be selected in roughly the same spot in this year?s Draft. Robinson showed Thursday that that would have been a mistake, however, as Sullinger was held to just six points on seven shots to go with five fouls and four turnovers.

It?s tough to make too much of a Summer League performance, but Robinson seems closer to being who we thought he?d be following Thursday?s performance.
