I'll defer to Bill James comments on Rose, that the thing I remember about him was just being "Charlie Hustle." He ran from the dugout to the on deck circle. He ran from the on deck circle to the batters box. He ran from home to 1st regardless if he got a hit, drew a walk, or whatever. And when he was done, he ran back to the dugout. He did everything 110%.
Forget all the other ancillary crap about his character and off field issues. That's how I want my son to play baseball. Problem is, today, I can't point at any player and say, that's who you need to emulate. There aren't any players wired like Pete Rose anymore.
I'm coaching a coach-pitch little league team this year with a friend of mine. We've got 17 kids between the ages of 6-8. Maybe two or three of them run to first, and through first, after they make contact. All the other kids wait to see if its fair or foul, pull up, or just give up, if they think they're going to get thrown out. That just pisses me off to no end.
