After 15 years with as a store manager I decided to resign and take a job with the normal 5 days a week 7:30 to 5 hours so I can spend more time with he wife and kids. Well, seeing how it is the Christmas season I gave around 5-6 weeks notice and agreed to stay unitl after the holidays which is sort of causing me an ethical problem. The company I (still) work for grants 5 personal days for it's managers every January first. The personal days can be used almost any time over the next year for whatever you need and can be broken up into hours. I can the personal days as long as I work 1 day after the last personal day I take. My last day will be Jan 6th and the kids are off school that week so my question is would it be wrong to use a few of those days so I can take off all week except for Friday? Yes I have been there 15 years and have ran 2 stores the last 2 years but it sort of feels wrong ....

Do you need their recommendation for another job?

I'd say do it, it's within your rights as an employee to take those, you don't have to justify anything.

No, new job already sewed up and I can start when I want. My problem is that I love the job I am leaving and it was VERY diificult to leave. I would like to leave on good terms (ala 5-6 weeks notice) so I could come back if I ever chose to do so. We had a party Sunday night and half of my crew cried!:(

Sort of feels like I would be stealing from them.

Then don't do it.

Exactly. When I left a company I had two personal days left, and a vacation. My regional let Me add my vacation on at the end of My two weeks, so I got paid for it, but they tried to screw me out of My two personal days.

I told them I needed them to get some car work and stuff done in order to get them off and after I bitched and moaned they gave them to Me.

If you leave ANY of those 5 days on the table... then I can see why you had to settle for ND...

You just got done saying why you did this... and then to turn around and not use those days to spend with the family this month ?!?!
ND must be a pretty easy school.. do they teach anything there? :wink2:

A lot of companies give you personal days at the beginning of the year, and you earn them as you work through the year. If you take all of your days and quit immediately then you might be required to pay a pro-rated portion of those days back. In this case you will have earned just over a half an hour of personal time this year, and would have to pay the rest back, probably by forfeiting a large portion of your last paycheck

Forget what the others guys said: Do what you feel comfortable with and can justify to yourself.

PS Just because you have a job lined up does not mean the current employer won't play a part in your employment future.

talk to your employees, and if you feel comfortable whoever you report to.

also let the people under you know that they can always use you as a reference or help in the future. it may come of really cheesey but its nice to know a guy doesnt dump you when he leaves.

its a tough choice, but when in doubt id side with my family. you only get to see your kids grow up once.
