People still stupid when it comes to obesity...

I still don't buy it. I mean, if we live in such a perilous world frought with all of these evil temptations, then why isn't everybody addicted to something? Isn't it just too convenient and a lot easier to simply say, "oh, well, I'm addicted to food and I can't help it that I'm fat, than to pull the twinkie out of your mouth and get your fat ass moving in the general direction of a healthy lifestyle?
if you read from some psychologists they actually stated that all human beings are addicted to some thing in their lives but just don't know it. Say for instance if you grew up with an alcoholic parent, you are addicted to alcohol on a genetic state even if you odn't drink......I think its a load of crap, but its some of the dumb shit I have read at work....

wyo, there's a difference between addiction and inclination. the term addiction is overused and too often misused. just because one really wants to do something and ends up doing whatever that is, it does not necessarily mean that the person has an addiction. addiction is about feeling like a slave to what is compelling you. addiction is about having to increase what it is that you're addicted to because you're becoming desensitized. addiction is about continuing with the compulsion even though it is recognized that the addiction brings with it negative consequences. obese people are not necessarily addicted to food; although, it is highly likely that obesity satisfies each of the conditions i just discussed.

well, of course, it is easier to state that one is addicted and that addiction can't be overcome. addiction wouldn't be addiction if it were easy to overcome. wyo, you're battling mounds and mounds and mounds of research if you continue to state that overeating and addiction can't coexist. the science is there. did you google the terms i previously listed? there's some reading material for you. i'm not making this stuff up.

A few societal and political trends working here:

1.
The findings appear in the January issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
I'm just SHOCKED that this journal, which presumably represents the POV of the preventative medicine industry, would publish a survey that says Americans support anti-obesity policies, which presumably would funnel more money into the preventative medicine industry. I guess the roughly 1/6 of GDP we spend on "health care" just isn't enough.

2. If the survey results are to be believed, the never-ending trend of individuals expecting government to solve their personal problems, while endlessly complaining that taxes are too high and that government just doesn't do enough to help them, continues.

3. Re: the prior commentary about how hectic life is, that's largely a choice too. Prioritization of what's important and a willingness to step off the competitive parenting track and not over-parent can reduce this quite a bit in many cases.

4. Being a little heavy isn't the end of the world health-wise. Obsessing over weight and body-image is likely worse for you, despite what the health industry and mass media perpetually pound into our heads.

one, you are not necessarily addicted to alcohol if at least one of your parents was. two, scientists have actually located and defined an addiction gene. if you do your research on this, you will find that this is the case. in fact, scientists have been able to suppress this gene and recognize the following change.

All this addiction stuff is bullshit, nothing but bullshit. If that were the case I should have mailed it in last fall and just succumb to the fact that I am addicted to two all beef patties....

There is a trick to it, either eat less, exercise more, or godforfuckingbid BOTH! I have actually gotten to enjoy healthy foods and only find myself craving cheeseburgers and BBQ on a rare occasion. Whomever said "in moderation"... their grandmother was right, nothing wrong with some pizza or candy or ice cream occasionally, just don't eat the whole damn carton, and there is no need in this world for "King Sized" candy bars.

Want to spend more time with the family, try riding bikes together or taking walks in one of the many public parks (just not Berliner after dark  ) instead of renting movies and pigging out. Fucking stupid fat people, all you have to do is set your mind to it.

I agree in general with this

But the majority of the people just do not have any will power and have no desire to change. If that is the case be fat and don't complain.

Depends on the person I think....

I will say that in one point in my life, I was at 298lbs. That was about 2 years ago now (January 2005).

When I talk with the doctor this January, I'll be at 250ish and my goal is to get down to about 230 or so.

congrats man that is good! Keep up the good work!

I have too :)

I want to be able to keep up with the kiddos when they get here

Besides I cut a deal with my parents over it. I said that if I lost the weight, they would have to stop smoking.

They are doing better without the cigs and I'm able to run a mile without feeling like I'm gonna die....

Maybe that's another resolution....make it 2 miles this year....

Help may be on the way (in 10 years):

Chewing Gum May Be Used In The Treatment Of Obesity

London, England (AHN) - British scientists have developed an appetite-suppressing drug which can be injected or mixed in chewing gums to treat obesity. The scientists have been given funding to develop the drug to treat obese people by making them "feel full" and to eat less.
Steve Bloom, leader of the research team at the Imperial College and Hammersmith Hospital in London said the drug contain pancreatic polypeptide, a naturally occurring hormone that induce loss of appetite. The hormone is often lacking in overweight people.
Researchers hope to make the drug commercially available within the next 10 years.
