One of the rumors flying around down here is that the "brass" at Florida doesn't want Spurrier back. They want to look longterm and think that if he comes back to Florida he will just be around for another 3-5 years. They want someone who will be at the school for 10+ years like Spurrier was his first time around.

LoKy: FWIW: That's the sentiment of a Florida fan we chatted with at sports bar Saturday as our game w/PSU ended. I approached him and asked what's go'n on? He was quite vocal in not wanting SS to return. Limited future, been there done that, SS's bad mouthing of FLA when he left, and a personal attack on SS, saying that with him at FLA, he always wanted spot light and managed to rile up lots of folks w/off the cuff criticisms.

FlaFan ended by wishing for UM for a future coach.

The Washington job opened up today and there will be a few more. This will take a while to shake out at the end of the season because the ADs won't allow their coaches to be contacted until after the season is over. Some coaches will not want any contracts signed or announcements made until after the bowl games. Don't forget about Neuheisel lurking out there along with Spurrier.

My bad, I did look at that and figure that out after I posted that earlier. Just never came back and editted my post. Didn't feel like it. Either way, no one answered the question, did the Washington coach get fired?

JoePa could be taking the Gene Keady route - bring in your own replacement and leave on your own terms, with a hand-picked successor.

Then everyone can save face: JoePa doesn't get run out of town for sucking on ice, the school doesn't have to deal with the backlash of forcing out a legend, and they still get a new head coach that can transition into the job.

So that would mean a JoePa retirement tour next season, right?

Not if he losses his last three games to go 2-9 for the season and 0-8 in conference. They play 4-4 Northwestern at home, then at 3-5 Indiana who is tougher than their record indicates, and close out at home against 4-4 Michigan State who should've beat Michigan at the Pig House.

I read he was "stepping down". So yeah, he was fired.
Gilbertson went to the AD and said either give me a vote of confidence and extend my contract or cut me loose. Said he would be happy either way. He just wanted to have some certainty about his future instead of a year to year existence. It was described as a mutual decision.
